Over the past few decades we have seen a surge in the use of technology and also of the innovations that go along with it. Now more than ever we are looking down to our phones for bits of information. Much of this information is tied to social media sites like Instagram or Facebook. With new technological ways of relating over the web, there is much less face to face interaction going on. Also, the individual in Western society has become more important than the whole, or the collective. Being successful and making a life for yourself has become more imperative than creating and keeping lasting relationships. We are self-absorbed in Western society and generally focused on ourselves. Media shows images of what it is like to be successful, rich, famous, beautiful, so why wouldn't we follow in suit and attempt to become all of those things? It makes …show more content…
Narcissism as we have both written, is something that is caused by an outlook that we are needing to be singularly successful and to do well on our own, etc. When the need to be the only one and the best and only thinking of ourselves becomes overwhelming, I see how our culture has defeated the point of finding who we truly are. In the West we are polar opposite to the East on certain subjects like this. However, in the East there is at times a feeling of not having a voice, or having to follow through with what others want before ourselves. As someone who believes in soul purpose and the innate desire to become our true selves, I see narcissism in the West as a positive and negative event both existing at the same time. It is wild that finding balance can mean the difference between getting caught up in yourself and the amount of attention others are giving you, and doing things for yourself and not relying on others to validate your
