Narcissism Self Esteem And Nurturance Summary

The article, Narcissism, self-esteem, and parental nurturance, by P.J. Watson and Susan E. Hickman, discusses how several hundred undergraduates were examined and questioned using the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI) about the relationship between parental attention and self-esteem to determine if absence of change associated with healthy self-esteem would affect the links of three key adaptive NPI elements with other signs of narcissism as well as the opinions of parents as nurturing. The records used to support the authors results vary and include articles, studies, and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The results of their study concluded that the leadership/authority dimension was commonly associated with adaptive outcomes while the other two dimensions were commonly associated with maladaptive outcomes. There was a linkage made between high superiority scores and higher self-esteem, while there was a positive correlation seen between self-esteem and entitlement/exploitativeness. Because of removing this dimension, a link appears between the leadership/authority and the father nurturance. A small correlation was found between self-absorption/self-admiration and mother nurturance. Beyond expected connections with other narcissism variables, entitlement/exploitativeness scores presented no other substantial relationships.
