Why do we find it so necessary to get involved with smartphones when it causes us to drift away from reality and what is truly important to us? Times have changed since smartphones have become such a popular device to use. No matter the age, smartphones have become a part of or have affected the lives of numerous amounts of individuals. Throughout the years technology has began to take over more and more people’s lives targeting teens especially. A school is suppose to be a quiet and easy place to do work and learn every day, when smartphones come into the picture kids aren’t paying attention to their school work as much as they should be. Through research banning smartphones and cellular devices has helped to raise grades and also improve relationships with friends, teachers and even family members. Rachel Ehmke the writer of “Teens and Social Media” makes a good point when she states, “Not only does limiting the amount of time you spend plugged into a computer provide a healthy counterpoint to the tech-obsessed world; it strengthens parent-child bonds” (Ehmke). Phones are breaking up relationships and banning smartphones in schools or even at the dinner table will help gain back the teen they used to be and show them the world outside their phone. A research study was conducted to see the outcome of banning phones at a school. This found that a majority of students’ grades were risen by an average of 6.4% just because they didn’t have a smartphone in their hand (Chang). Not only were grades improved significantly but the divide between students was taken away. When schools allow students to have their phones out during class or during a break there is an unfair advantage to those who have access to any answers they need in class. Soloway states, “Smart phones are the one tech that can eliminate digital divide… conceivable that every child, rich or poor, can have one 24/7” (Soloway). This is illogical because it has been proven that smart phones cause a divide in society, and lower income families usually cannot afford smart phones without struggling. Money is an obvious issue when it comes to smart phones and Soloway’s theory is invalid.
Although technology is improving, people tend to abuse the use of a smart phone. Smart phones may have a good meaning behind them but they have many negative effects on society. In my research I found that smart phones had more of a negative impact on society than positive and the proof is right in front of our eyes in schools, public and our homes today.
