No one wants to wake up 6am in the morning after a long night of homework with baggy eyes and messy hair. The feelings of exhaustion while walking like a zombie to class. You dream about yourself resting your head on the desk and grab a little shut eye, but we, the students, struggle to put our heads up to listen to our today’s lesson. The mass amount of homework, projects due on the same day, and studying for tests are not allowing students to have the proper sleep, which is the main reason why schools should allow naps for students. Having the opportunity to have at least 20-minute nap in class will contribute to our brains and body functioning better and improve test results. Your brain starts to operate, as early as 10am or late as noon, yet school starts at 7:50am everyday from Monday to Friday, taking in so much information way too early for the brain to handle. According to National Sleep Foundation, research say that delaying school start-times by an hour increases amount of sleep and improves performance (www.cfah.org). Students will have superior memory and could focus more in class. Not only will a nap benefit the student academically, but also the student can participate in class more and the classroom will be more energetic. I understand how difficult it is to be awake while taking a test due to me staying up to study and likely not remember anything at all. Study shows by researchers at the University of California that people who took a nap before taking a test were 20% better than the people who didn’t sleep at all (www.nytimes.com). If the school and the system want students to improve their test results, then we should allow students to sleep before taking the test or not give out a large capacity of homework when a huge test is coming up like Finals or
