A nap a day helps keep the doctor away! New research shows that a nap during the day can make us sharper, healthier and even happier. Americans have been brainwashed. Our society looks down on naps. We regard time as money and see napping as wasteful and self-indulgent or as a sign of a mental or physical defect.
Most nappers are not lazy, ailing or senile. Three-fourths of people who nap do so because of shift-work jobs, study schedules, or babies allow them too little regular sleep. Most of the others nap because they just like to, but there is no evidence that they are more slothful than the rest of us. Catnaps of five or ten minutes don’t help much. When is it best to nap? Not when you feel the need most strongly. A nap taken before you are very tired will prevent fatigue. Sleep is necessary for physical and mental health. Whatever promotes health promotes longer life. Health statisticians say that coronary heart disease is less common in siesta countries than in Northern Europe and North America. Men who nap half an hour or more every day are 30 percent less likely to develop a cardiac condition than those who don’t nap. Naps also reduce the need for deep sleep and may make it harder for people with sleep problems to fall asleep or stay asleep at night.
Napping does have some hazards. Most people are groggy upon waking. So it’s dangerous to nap if you have to wake suddenly and immediately take control of complex machinery or technical operations. If you feel drowsy at the wheel and pull over for a nap, wait 15 minutes after waking before resuming your drive.
So remember, if you want to be a success, be healthier, and be happy. Do important jobs in the morning, when you are not sleepy and fit an after-lunch nap into your workday. Because, a nap a day helps keep the doctor

The argument of “Rethinking Sleep”, by Davis K. Randall, is people should consider sleeping in segments rather than 8 hour blocks. The two reasons are, naps with deep sleep help brains function at a high level, and segmented sleep improves daytime performance. Two more important pieces of evidence for the first reason are , “...recent studies suggest that any deep sleep- whether in an eight-hour block or a 36-minute nap- primes our brains to function at a higher level, letting us come up with better ideas, find solutions to puzzles more quickly, identify patterns faster, and call information more accurately. ”(lines 51-54), and “ Researchers at the City University of New York found that short naps helped subjects identify more literal and…
