Throughout the duration of the Napoleonic Era, France was on the verge of conquering much of Europe. However, due to their imperialistic mindset, many of Napoleon’s soldiers had developed a heightened sense of superiority. Which, consequently, meant that any area that “came into the Napoleonic empire had first to pass through the horrors of war and military occupation”. French revolutionary armies’ narcissism had allowed them to justify the horrible treatment of their conquered subjects. They reduced Patriotic feelings and the desire to preserve one's own nationalistic identity began arising in Europe.
