No candidate was more fit for the job of first consul than Napoleon himself. Napoleon was the people’s choice despite the fact that he was not elected to his office. He had been able to show his political prowess by always moving up the food chain during the revolution despite the twists and turns of power and favor. Then he was written off and sent with a miserable army to defeat the professional Austrian army in Italy. A true underdog in every sense of the word. On top of that while the French people had wanted to overthrow a king to have a republic but this had turned into the bloodbath that was the reign of terror. The people now wanted a strong leader one who would defeat enemies and solve problems at home. Then in March of 1815 Napoleon escaped the island and with a mere 1,500 men began to march towards Paris to rule France again. (Encyclopedia Britannica Online) His army would not fight a battle but would meet men ready to fight but upon seeing Napoleon everyone in his path joined him. Within three weeks he stood in the Capital of France as the accepted ruler by all his people. With a few slight modifications to the constitution Napoleon was ready for another great rule. However the counties that had defeated him before would not accept Napoleon back. They rallied up there troops as Napoleon gathered his for a final showdown. He would win battles but not the war and at the battle of Waterloo he again was forced from his throne and the name Napoleon would never come to scare the rulers of Europe
