It was in Paris at the young age of twenty eight that Joachim Murat was promoted to General. Returning to the war in Italy Murat had rejoined Napoleon at the bank of the Mincio River. The army was working on defeating General Beaulieus army. Leading the charge into battle was the Brave Murat who would jump at any chance he could get to be a part of the action. Murat was once again sent on a diplomatic mission to Genoa. There He delivered a message to the senate demanding an end to any secret Austrian trade and an end to any attacks made on French soldiers. After his return from meeting with the senators Murat went back to Mincio and under the orders of Serurier he was to try and invade the fortress of Mantua. He was to go by boat at night through the Po River swamps and make his way into the town. However this turned out to be a major failure as the men did not account for the dry season. Their boats had run a shore and they became stranded in the swamps. This cost his army a great deal of time and money both of which play a major factor into Napoleonic warfare.
