Upon analysis of Martha Ballard’s diary during the period 1785 to 1790, it is revealed that the nature of women’s work in later eighteenth-century New England was strongly divided by gender. According to Ulrich, although women could both work at home or outside, their contribution was never officially recognized. In addition, it can be deduced from the diary that women were expected to abide by the constrains of a patriarchal society while also conforming to gender norms. However, the women in these times were strangely empowered through the informal economy they had created for themselves. Throughout its 239 years of independence, the United States of America has experienced peace, war, and just about everything in between. American culture has evolved significantly since the 18th century, and nothing more effectively represents its centuries of triumphs and tragedies than the literature of American authors. Specifically through short stories, these authors discuss both personal and societal concerns of their times, and simultaneously interweave themes of life, love, and happiness in their works. I became an adult on Monday, June 15, 2015 during my AP Writing class, standing in the sweltering heat, completing 50% of my term 4 grade. It was a Moth presentation, based on the Moth radio hour. We all had to plan out a story to tell, something personal with a message that would resonate universally. I swallowed my fear and an illusion of pride, looked out at the teenagers I had spent years of classes with and, in short, told them the truth. For those five to seven minutes I let my façade slip…
