The biggest influence on me as a writer was the introduction to National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo. NaNoWriMo is a worldwide phenomenon based out of California. The basic idea is to give writers a chance to stretch themselves by challenging them to write fifty-thousand words in one month. As November approaches each year, novelists prepare to be antisocial and concentrate their brain power on hammering out a novel. From my first introduction to NaNoWriMo in 2013, I have participated twice and have yet to reach 50k. Despite this, I have found myself more confident with my self-identified title of author; furthermore I more prepared to write because of the encouragement and community provided by the NaNoWriMo culture.
As I mentioned I was introduced to NaNoWriMo in 2013 by a good friend and fellow writer in college. Galadriel had stumbled across the organization a few years before. November was approaching in our senior year, when Galadriel convinced me to sign up for an account. Despite having a fervent excitement toward the

I am a part of the Columbus region. Each region has designated people to run events throughout the month of November to encourage writing. I have gathered in groups as small as five and as large as 30 to write together. All working toward a common goal, we cheered each other on when someone reached a milestone word count, gave advice whenever a fellow novelist found themselves stuck, and inquired what everyone else was writing for their novel before dutifully reminding each other that our novels would not write themselves. I have only been to write-ins at libraries, yet that does not prevent our coordinators from providing tea, snacks, or candy to fuel our imaginations. As a group I have found there to be an accountability that is lacking when trying to write at home or

How do professional writers deal with writing blocks? Professional authors have battled with writer's block since the start of literature itself, famous authors such as Mark Twain even “offered advice” for writers to overcome writer's block: ““The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one,” (Van Cleave , Ryan, et al). This loss of words and inspirations strickens the author with loss of creative process and stop the production of their lifeline: their own writing; through interviews, a couple of writers have explained how they deal with writers block and how they find joy in working.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

Writing has not been my strongest subject throughout my time being in school. I’ve always struggled with the English language since it was my second language. This transferred to my writing and it was very noticeable. However, during my time in the Writing 39 series, it has influenced me to use the strategies I learned in writing and apply it to other classes. One thing I’ve discovered from being in Writing 39B is how to interpret the author’s purpose.…

I label myself as not being a writer but someday it’s going to be my duty to teach others to be.…

Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…

Over all writing the narrative journal made me have a great time. Being able to reminisce and write down what I experienced during the photo was fun. Looking at the photo for a couple of minutes, helped me gather my thoughts quickly and played the scene in my head as if I was there. Even though not every picture had a great story behind it, it made me realize that everything that has happened in my life are memories that will always stick to me. The problems that I encountered was being able to add more sensory details to my narrative journal.…
