Nanotechnology and nanoengineering by themselves has been shown to produce significant scientific and technological advances in fields such as medicine; sports; military; etc. They can be applied in cancer research, early diagnosis of atherosclerosis, batteries, and the preservation of machines and other applications. Nanotechnology in the biomedical field can be defined as the manipulation of matter and engineering involved in the design, synthesis, characterization, and application of materials and devices at the nanometer scale. A nanometer is one billionth of a meter or 10-9 , roughly the size scale of a molecule itself. For an example, a DNA molecule is about 2.5 nm long while a sodium atom is about 0.2 nm. The impact of nanotechnology is seen in nanoengineered substrates that can be designed to have very specific and controlled chemical and physical properties.
Applications of nanotechnology in the military are weapons and armor. For an example, for creating super strong materials the military uses tungsten(a chemical element),for the basic material. It is five times stronger than steel and at least twice as strong as any impact-resistant material currently in use as protective gear. Another new nano-armor is called "smart" body armor. It weaves thin pads or cloth from fibers that can sense the impact of a bullet or shrapnel and automatically stiffen. This material would be even more resistant to penetration and less cumbersome than the plated armor troops currently…
