Silver nanoparticles have been widely considered as a novel therapeutic agent to have a strong inhibitory and bactericidal effects.(biosynthesis of nanopartices by MOs) They interact with phosphorous moieties in DNA resulting in inactivation of DNA replication. Several forms of silver have been demonstrated to be effective against severe chronic osteomyelitis, burns urinary tract infections and even central venous catheter infections. Also silver exhibited excellent antibacterial effect when treated to implant materials coated with hydroxyapatite(A mechanistic study of antibacterial effect of silver ions).Microbial experiments has implied that interaction of Ag+ with thiol group played an essential role in bacterial inactivation. Silver Silver nanoparticles have inhibitory activity against Gram positive bacteria and Gram negative bacteria as well. Several experiments conducted against E.coli, B. subtilis, SS. aureus, methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium, ESBL-positive K pneumonia, S. typhi, V cholera to analyse the inhibitory effects of silver nanoparticles.The antibacterial activity are related to the total surface area of the nanoparticles. Several tests showed a slight improvement in the antibacterial activity of aluminium nanoparticles with antibiotics against few pathogenic strains of bacteria. However there are not much significant reviews on the antimicrobial properties of metal oxides nanoparticles with alumina in particular. Studies have indicated that alumina nanoparticles had a mild inhibitory effect against pathogenic strains of bacteria at higher concentrations. Alumina nanoparticles are also adopted for drug delivery systems due to their potential scavenging behaviour.(Nanoparticles: a boon to drug delivery, therapeutics, diagnostics and imaging.
