Name's Short Story: The Clocks

Great Essays
Name wanted nothing more but for time to hurry up.

His eyes, the dreadful colour of jealousy and greed, darted between the clock and the vacant seat across his table. He was sure that the clock enjoyed how agonisingly slow this wait was. It ticked by at a sluggish pace, in a weird mechanic sort of laughter that no one but Name could understand. Everyone else said that it was impossible for clocks to feel emotion, let alone laugh. But Name knew better. He knew clocks were demonic creations that revelled in the torture of poor beings like him. Clocks were always determined to prove how time was too fast, too slow and too imperfect. It would always be unfair.

Name could feel his spite unveil from his apathetic expression. Immediately he turned

Name felt the tell-tale signs of nervous jitters and glanced down to his watch. An instant smile, too large to be innocent, stretched across his face when the time registered. “Three... more... hours... to go...!" Name whispered, allowing his smile to grow a little more. His patience, his torment, his loyalty… All would finally, finally, be paid off. “Soon…” he murmured, his volume dropping low. “Very... very… soon.” Unable to hold back his delight, Name curled into a shivering ball and hugged himself.

People passing by gave him strange looks, but none bothered to ask what was wrong with him. To them, Name was a mere background character; because he ditched his sunglasses and floral shirt, no one recognised him as the famous mascot. It was relieving to win back his personal space, so Name thanked the heavens for everything leading up to this fan-free moment. Name shuddered; if he showed up wearing his usual clothes instead, his fans would all swarm him like fish to a worm.

It was the person she was talking to.

He had black sunglasses, wearing them more for safety than style. He had a special Codenamepack, one that he was not wearing at that moment. He had red hair and a rare, awkward smile — the one that brightened Name’s day with just a single twitch at the corners.

"Oh... Codename looks so weird in casual clothes..." Name muttered. Realising that he was drooling, of all things, he quickly wiped his saliva off. Disgusting. So preoccupied with cleaning his face, Name almost failed to notice the two coming closer… and they were getting dangerously close. Upon realising this, Name squeaked and lowered himself in his chair, then slapped himself. “No, no, no… Stupid, stupid, stupid… They can see me…” Immediately he darted off to the side, letting his chair fall down, and ran to the nearest shop. Swiftly and stealthily, Name jumped over the counter and ducked down. He wringed his hands in pressure, then pulled out his inventory and rummaged through it. He searched for anything that could make him less

In Merle Temple’s (2018), A Ghostly Shade of Pale, the book tells the story of Temple’s career as an undercover Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics agent during the 1970s at the height of the war on drugs. Although the names and some of the places have been changed to protect the identities of former agents and criminals, this book has a lot of strengths and weaknesses. Some of the most notable strengths are the settings or locations, because it is based in Mississippi, which for Mississippi natives, grabs their attention and allows them to relate more to the book. Another strength lies in Temple’s ability to use very vivid imagery in descriptions of places.…

This is represented in Harwood’s poem, ‘The Violets,’ the poem emphasises what is important to Gwen Harwood and how time controls us. In the poem Gwen Harwood says, ‘...even when my father, whistling, came from work, but used my tears to scold the thing I could not grasp or name that, while I slept, had stolen from me.’ The line reinforces that time controls us and can be robbed from us while we sleep, but the line also shows that her memory is distorted due to the section that…

When he said that the fire “projected its rays”, it suggested that the “fire” had the human ability to manipulate objects. Later, Poe said that the sound of the clock came from “brazen lungs”. This supported the harsh sound of clock which further increased the fear of the people. Each of these instances were examples of personification in the story. An important metaphor used towards the end of the passage said that at each sound of the clock, “the giddiest grew pale, and the more aged and sedate passed their hands over their brows as if in confused reverie.”…
