Why I think this is because the grave robbers wouldn’t want to be caught while digging up a body. Also, the grave robbers had another reason they were digging up bodies for they would be skeletons. One of my thoughts was why they were digging up the bodies.…

The way a child views the world originates from his or her childhood. Actions or events that happened in their childhood could end up hurting them in the long fun of life. In many works of literature characters view the world because of their childhood. The Murders in the Rue Morgue, written by Edgar Allan Poe is a first of its kind detective story that uses a detailed narrative with imagery, simile, and attention to even the most insignificant detail to suggest the themes of the story and draw readers into the investigation of the L’espanaye family murders. These literary devices and techniques are best seen in the description of Monsieur C. Auguste Dupin and the detailing of the crime scene on the Rue Morgue. In describing Monsieur C. Auguste Dupin, Edgar Allan Poe uses extreme detail and many literary devices. About Dupin, Poe writes, “As the strong man exults in his physical ability, delighting in such exercises as call his muscles into action, so glories the analyst in that moral…

Joseph Campbell’s monomyth theory is evident within J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book as the notion of the “special world” (Vogler 10) is glorified through contrast in relation to the core themes of the texts. Within both novels, the protagonists are only able to truly experience the themes of family, belonging and the supernatural whilst in the special world, placing an emphasis on this realm. Furthermore, contrast is consistently utilised to demonstrate that the ordinary world cannot offer the experiences that the special world can, thus glorifying the supernatural realm through these themes. Also referred to as the hero’s journey, Campbell’s monomyth theory is specified as the comparative…

True earnestness in life is a rare thing. Kierkegaard writes in “At a Gravesite” that one must be earnest about death, because “death in earnest gives life force as nothing else does”. (Kierkegaard 83) Watanabe-San, the lead character in the film Ikiru, found himself with a short time to live after years of not doing anything significant. The situation of this “insignificant man” is also described in “At a Gravesite” as a regular man dies without being anyone important. In the novel The Graveyard Book, I would add another living boy that had resided in the graveyard 50 years prior to Bod’s arrival. Nothing would change at first with the narrative, except there would be skepticism and fear among some of the inhabitants that do not want Bod to be a repeat of “last time”. What this means can be open to interpretation at first. As time progresses, however, Bod eventually overhears a couple ghost talking about preventing another “Bod”. He wants to figure out exactly what happened.…
