Names In The Crucible

A name is a title. It is the first thing seen when starting a new paper, starting a new opportunity. A name is what describes a person even when the person is unknown. A name is of such significance, because a name could simply be all a person has. Names are something that could never possibly be taken from someone. When thinking of the significance of names, John Proctor from the Crucible comes to mind. In his monologue he says, “I have given you my soul, leave me my name!” (Miller, Arthur). He had everything taken from him, but the one thing he had left was his name. No matter what happens in life, the wrongs, the rights, a person’s name is something one will always have. My full legal name is Alyssa Albany Pardee, though I was not always a Pardee. My birth name was Alyssa Albany Davis. At the age of twelve, my stepfather adopted me as his daughter. I had gone from the utter most common name in the world to such an uncommon name. My name had always been simple. My first name, Alyssa, was chosen by mother. When my birth father’s grandparents crossed Ellis Island from Lebanon, their accents were heavy and they were not very well understood (Pardee, Misty Bussell). Therefore, what was said as David was interpreted as Davis. My forever last name Pardee (Par-dee) has a meaning of certainty and truth (Family History). Having a last name that means certainty and truth has more meaning to me than I think anyone will ever understand.
