Unlike nearly all the occupations, American teachers’ salary has nothing to do with their performance in the classroom. The Teachers Union also refused to change this policy, therefore causing a negative chain of reactions. Even more debuts accumulate throughout this long debate, as the school’s reputation fall rapidly throughout recent years. Some of the most talented students might choose a private academy and the top teachers can easily pick another prosperous profession. The best teachers lost their confidence in this profession when they can hardly get any promotion and other professions are prospering. Unlike the economy under Communists reign, the system in the democratic politics is more open, which provides the chances for our teachers to leave the

In the news article, New York’s Bad Teachers, Back on the Job, Marc Sternberg authenticates his credibility by making reasonable claims and backing them up. Sternberg claims “Forcing hundreds of these [unmotivated] teachers upon schools this fall... will weaken school accountability, damage staff morale... and undermine the educational gains students have been making...” This assertion is supported by personal experience and statistics gathered during his time as the founding principal of Bronx Lab School. Sternberg recalled that “by 2008, 86 percent of Bronx Lab students graduated with more than 350 college acceptances and $2.5 million in financial aid in hand” thanks to the dedicated teachers he hired. Not only does this convinces the reader…

Kenneth Cole Gets Schooled is written in a second-person point-of-view that gives the reader insight about “Teachers Rights vs. Student Rights” ( Sirota 759). The essay alone would be considered more of an evaluation essay instead of an argumentative essay. What makes Sirota’s piece of work more of an evaluation instead of an argumentative essay is the fact that Sirota is making a judgement about the “Teachers rights vs. Student Rights” (759). Sirota’s attended audience for his piece of work is towards teachers and students, but taking a deeper look into it, it leans more towards the school board directors. The authors purpose is to have the school board of directors to “unionize teachers” to help receive “better academic results” (Sirota…

One of Betsy Devos’ speeches in August 2015 at the SXSWedu convention in Texas emphasizes her education vision on the issue of unequal education access in America. Her speech uses the propaganda technique of emotional appeal to convey messages about this social issue. In the speech, Betsy Devos uses a lot of emotional appealing phrases, such as calling traditional public education system a “dead end,” and labeling public schools as “low performing” schools (Strauss). She is denigrating the quality of traditional public schools, she thinks that traditional public schools are simply not as good as charters or privates. Besides, she also uses the propaganda technique of “glittering generalities”.…

There are many articles that I have read over the last few weeks, but two in particular really challenged my thinking and philosophy in regards to education. In the article, “Edwin & Phyllis,” Lynn Fendler engages her readers with a meaningful dialogue between an experienced teacher and a prospective educator, debunking some of the more traditional responses that young, perspective teachers might give for wanting to become educators. The truth is that teaching can be anything but glamorous and oftentimes straddles the fine line between causing more harm then the good that it seeks to accomplish in the life of a child. Prospective teachers must not only think about what motivates them in wanting to become educators, but what type of teachers…

What is the moral theory of utilitarianism? According to Vaughn, “[Utilitarianism is] the view that right actions are those that result in the greatest overall happiness for everyone involved” (Vaughn, 79). At face value such a moral theory sounds great, because it should promote general happiness. While this is true, a particular argument, the telishment argument, shows that utilitarianism is not a viable moral theory because it promotes decisions that run contrary to historical moral inclinations. To prove this is the case, this paper will first dive into what happiness means in the utilitarian sense, the telishment argument itself, what points of contention the tellishment argument brings up against utilitarianism, and finally, what utilitarianism has to say in its own defense.…

In the article, “A New Deal for Teachers,“ by Mathew Miller, he argues that low income families with students from fourth grade through eighth grade show significantly lower tests scores compared to students from high income areas. This problem Miller addresses, is that there are not enough good teachers in poor cities, and not enough teachers willing to continue their jobs as teachers. Another argument Miller indicates is that having a good quality teacher makes a huge difference in the child’s education and overall development. Miller says that teachers, who do not care about their students and their performance, result in students doing poorly in class academics. One way to resolve these problems is to raise the wages for the teachers, but base salary upon performance and educational background.…
