Najmuddeen Abdus Salaam, age 46, seemed like the ideal person to mentor inmates at the Marion Correctional Institution; he was a former who held master’s degree in human behavior. A spokesperson the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said that they contracted with Salaam's Win-Win Institute to work with inmates. The spokesperson said that there was also a second contract with Salaam’s Prison News Network.

According to a The Columbus Dispatch article, a highway patrol officer stopped Salaam for speeding on May 15th as he was driving along Route 23 in Delaware County. The trooper called for a police search dog and then 249 grams of white powder, which the police suspected was cocaine, and $1,085, which officials claim were proceeds
