(MIP-1) Najmah’s father and brother being taken by the Taliban is a major experience for her. (SIP-A) Before her father was taken, Najmah has all of her family and nothing really too big to worry about. (STEWE-1) At the beginning of this book, Najmah’s mother says to her, …show more content…
(SIP-A) Najmah’s mother and baby brother were killed by an airstrike and this leads to major character development. (STEWE-1) After the bombs have gone off, Najmah describes the scene as, “My mother lies on the ground nearby with her legs sprayed at odd angles to the rest of her. She reaches her hand towards me, and opens her lips to speak. Instead of words, blood pours from her mouth…Habib lies motionless”(Staples 67).This is the moment after the bombs have gone off, and Najmah first sees her dead mother and brother lying on the ground. Najmah is not talking and will not talk to anyone over the course of this journey as she feels that she can’t. (STEWE-2) The food conditions for the group are very bad, Najmah says, “I try to imagine where he will find food in these rocky hills”(Staples 106-107). This is a change in Najmah’s character because she says earlier in the book how her family's farm has enough food for the whole family and no one ever doesn’t have enough, but now, the food is scarce and hard to come by.
