Nail Salon Observation

Improved Essays
My observation was taking place at a nail salon. As I entered the door I the employee closest to the door greeted me. I experienced the same thing I experience every time I walk into a nail shop. Everything is quiet you hear either low calming music in the background or you hear the TV playing typical girl drama series. As I walked in everyone stopped, turned around and looked at me. This is no surprise; this is the same experience every time. Every girl who has walked into a nail salon will tell you they experience the same thing. It’s like an unwritten rule to always quickly stare at the person walking inn. After I made it past the door the nail tech told me to pick a color. As always you walk over to the wall and your bombarded with hundreds

Breaking Social Norms In today’s world we are given a list of social norms we feel compelled to follow as a society. Social norms are the rules of behavior that are considered acceptable in a group or society (YourDictionary). Norms typically change over time due to several different factors and reasons throughout generations. Over the past two days I have spent my time breaking the norm of giving personal space by sitting extremely close to strangers and documenting the people’s reactions while doing so.…

The original idea of the American Dream can can be linked to the founding fathers, who believed people should have the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. Violating Social Norms (or: The Most Uncomfortable Elevator Ride of My Life) Upon completing this assignment, I have come to the conclusion that trying to violate a social norm on purpose is actually difficult and takes calculation, whereas accidentally doing it is so much easier. I chose to model my violation of a social norm off of the famous elevator groupthink experiment from the 1960s that has to do with conformity and ‘peer pressure’. I use to do this when I was a kid with my friends at the mall. We would have a high success rate, partly because there were about six of us.…

I think that Fitzgerald’s message about the American dream is still very relevant today because the notion of wanting more is not going to just disappear in a generation. People are naturally ambitious and are going to want to succeed and accomplish as much as possible. After reading “The Price of Nails,” I found a few examples that portray the message that Fitzgerald imposes in “The Great Gatsby.” In the article, it states that many salon workers are immigrants from countries like China and Korea. It gives a specific example of a lady named Ms. Ren who recently arrived from China and was looking for a job in the States.…

Norm Violations: Violation and Observations When we witness someone violate a norm, we question their intent of doing so. Most of us believe that there are common/set guidelines, rules, and behaviors we should, and often times do, follow. The way we react to norm violations is subjective, it varies from person to person and can either be negative or positive. Through my own observations, and probably through many others, I noticed that people tend to react fairly similar.…

Lack of a legal immigrant status leaves them as a perfect target for the employers to take advantage of them (The Manicure Capital). In other words, the immigrant workers do not have a work visa, work permit or permanent resident card, which means they are not legally authorized to work in the United States and this is another reason the employers are able to abuse them . For intense, Nir (2015) stated, “most must hand over cash usually $100 to$200, but sometimes much more as a training fee” (Low price, Low pay Section). The salon owners understand that new immigrant workers do not know the labor laws in the United States due to language barrier, so they take advantage of these immigrant workers and charge them an illegal hiring fee. Unfortunately, new immigrant workers are abused by service industries in every possible way.…

    Norm Observation Report

******************************** As society we set standards for how an individual should present themselves in any setting they may be attending. A professor named James M. Henslin (2015), explained that a norm is an expectation that we set of “right” behavior within any setting (49). A norm violation can vary in many situations from affecting a person’s hearing, sight, smell, taste, personal space or just making an individual uncomfortable. Presenting a different type of behavior that is “enforced because they are thought essential to core values or the wellbeing of a group” (51) may be a different view of defining a norm violation. Putting it to the test I went out to observe two norms and also committed one myself and evaluated people 's reactions to different events that occurred in public.…
