Hulihe‘e Palace is located in historic Kailua-Kona on Ali‘i Drive. The Palace was originally built out of lava rock during the Kingdom of Hawai‘i on land known as Kalāke‘e, a former residence of Kamehameha the Great. Ruth Awasa, a Japanese American internment camp survivor, once stated, “Sometimes good comes through adversity” (Awasa). After viewing and researching several articles and pictures on densho.org, I gathered some pieces of knowledge about the Japanese Americans that resided in the Minidoka Internment Camp in southern Idaho. The internment camp residents I believe faced treatment there that was not justified for their situations. Additionally, the Japanese Americans there, especially the younger people, I argue, had a positive attitude throughout, like Ruth Awasa. Minidoka was in a very desolate and barren place in the state, so it was easy to become depressed over the surroundings that the Japanese Americans faced.…
Kamehameha was the son of Keoua Kalani and Kekuiapoiwa when he got taken away at a young age to be protected from a death threat from neighboring chief Alapainui. Soon after 5 years hiding in a cave and getting the nickname Paiea, the hard shelled crab, Alapainui accepted him and the death threat passed. His father died later when he was 14 and was adopted by his uncle, Kalaniopuu. After Kalaniopuu died, his sons Keoua, Kiwalao and his brother Keawemauhili attacked Kamehameha starting the conquest of Hawaii which included Keoua, Kiwalao, Keawemauhili, Kaiana, Kahekili, Kalanikupule, Kaeokulani and Kaumualii against Kamehameha, and Keeaumoku. King Kamehameha is often recognized as one of the greatest monarchs and leaders of Hawaii. “Acclaimed as the strongest Hawaiian ruler, he maintained his kingdom’s independence throughout the difficult period of European discovery and exploration of the islands—a task that proved too great for his successors” (Kamehameha I). While King Kamehameha deserves recognition for his accomplishments, in my opinion, Queen Ka’ahumanu was the better leader.
