Pursuing a career in the field of Early Childhood Studies not only involves working with the child, but the families of the children as well. Standard 2 of The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) informs us that the goal is to “know about, understand, and value the importance and complex characteristics of children’s families and communities” ("2010 Standards for Initial Early Childhood Professional Preparation," 2011) and use that understanding to create a relationship that supports the children and their respective families. My dad was a figure in my life, however he worked all week, and traveled a lot for his business. Growing up, I would spend most days at home with my grandmother and my cousins. Because my grandmother was available to stay at home with us, my mom did not believe it was necessary to put neither my sister nor I into preschool. Today, I feel as though I could have done better with going to preschool, because I do not believe that I received enough social interaction with children that I was not related to. To this day it is very difficult for me to make friends, because at such a young age I was granted so many immediate friends. Though my childhood may have played out in that way, another child may have grown up completely
