AMI 2 Final Written Assignment In this essay I will be comparing the piece Rhythm Danse by Richard Saucedo between the Bethune Band performance at Flato – Markham Theatre on May 16th, 2016 and two other performances by other schools. I will be comparing performances by The Homestead High School Concert Band, conducted by John Weir and the 2010 GMEA District V High School Honor Symphonic Band, conducted by Wayne Markworth with Bethune’s Symphonic Band. The first band I will be reviewing is The Homestead High School Concert Band, conducted by John Weir.…
In Duax article she mentioned how there have been multiple studies giving examples on how incorporating music in a child’s education can give the child many benefits. Duax had also quoted many other reliable people to add more evidence of success in her article. She also looked more in detail the benefits of including a musical education in a student’s life from the view of college administrators and the probability of higher SAT scores. Duax brought up the worry of lowering the funds for music classes and that six percent of schools do not provide any music…
The article The Importance of Music Education written by Alexis Kalivretenos, a trumpet player with a Bachelors Degree in music education from the University of Maryland, is a compelling article that argues the importance of keeping music in the core curriculum of education systems across the nation. Kalivertenos uses a combination of ethos pathos and logos to argue that music should not only be kept in the curriculum but actually benefits the other subjects in the curriculum. Kalivertenos states that music has always taken a back seat to other core subjects such as math and reading. She backs this up with a ten-year study of high school students which states “students in music classes receive higher scores on standardized tests than students with little to no musical involvement.”…
As students rush into class, Shannon Anderson, the White Bear South Campus Band Director, sits patiently in her office, wearing her casual band jacket with her last name on it. As students come into her office to ask her questions, she remains calm and is very friendly. “To me, caring for the students is more important than caring about the music”, says Mrs. Anderson while answering questions that range from counting music all the way to relationship advice. Mrs. Anderson’s drive for music became present while she was in band in the 6th grade. Her passion for teaching she says was different, she always loved to play school with her brother, and always wanted to become a teacher from the time she was little.…
If I have not challenged myself to practice and to confront challenges, I could not have become the principal player in our school’s jazz band and wind ensemble. After several breakthroughs, I decided to share my inspirations to the younger generation. This year, I am one of the coordinators of the Molding Musicians program supported by the Cypress Boys and Girls Club, teaching the fifth and sixth graders how to play an instrument. I appreciate the fact that my achievements did not come from an easy work, but rather a persistent standing against…
Mozart is a classical musician that everyone has heard about. His tantalizing music has captured the attention of multiple generations around the world. However, most people only learn about him when they are teenagers or young adults. What would happen if children were exposed to his music and other genres? This question has been asked by many people and studies have been created to find the answer.…
Many schools complain about music education sapping money out of their funds. Unfortunately, this statement is very much true. Music programs require a lot of money to actually function properly, however, keep reading and you will see why music education is an excellent and important subject to keep in schools and maybe even become a mandatory subject. Music programs have been proven to be effective and essential to a full, well rounded education because children in music education programs have a higher sense of responsibility and discipline and they are also more likely to stay in school, get…
The concert I went to was the instrumental major recital. This was a concert where students who had a instrumental major performed. The students that performed where Alec Van Eaton, Raquel Medina, Seow Lim, Blake Adams, Kristina Serrano, Charlotte Mcintosh-Deciancio, Jacob Chavez, Logan McCullough, Mckensie Rudd, Jake Fultz, Mihira Karnik, Beth Beach, Jorge Juan, Marc Chacon, Chanty Graficas-Rabi, David Murray, Chastin Short and Izzy Hyman. These are some of the pieces these students played where with drums, tuba, piano, violin, viola and cello. Some of the songs they played with these instruments where Evolution, Sonata Op.…
Based on statistics from 2001 off of an SAT test, “Students in music performance and appreciation scored higher on the SAT: students in performance scored 57 points higher on the verbal and 41 points higher on the math, and students in appreciation scored 63 points higher on verbal and 44 points higher on the math,” (College-Bound Seniors National Report). So in comparison to students who are not involved in music programs, these students did outstanding on their SATs. This collaborates with the idea that music training benefits students…
Singing is anatomical: the brain thinks, and the body responds, any time and any place, that is, if lifestyle behaviors have not deformed the vocal instrument (i.e., excessive spicy foods, alcohol, smoking, screaming, et cetera). Singing begins with an exhalation of human vocal sounds (phonation) (NIDCD, 2015). At the point of phonation, two smooth adjacent muscle tissues in the thorax come into contact and vibrate to create resonating sound waves from the throat, mouth, and nose (NIDCD, 2015). As any vocal performer will confirm, singing is athletic, and to sing competently, older adults need to be physically fit to meet the challenges of creating beautiful sounds. Being physically fit means having good physical hearing (or amplified by hearing…
The streaks of bright light outlined all of the grinning faces of the Vernon Hills High School Symphony Orchestra. The immense collaboration of endless hours of rehearing Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 for the Midwest audition piece to burning through Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini at Midwest. I can say that orchestra is part of who I am. Without orchestra, I would not have been able to encounter some of the amazing musicians that I have come to known. The fine arts is more than just a hobby or an activity on the sideline, it has molded my identity and interests.…
Music education is a profession that is often overlooked—there are no Common Core standards, many programs are being cut all over the nation, and many see it as an exclusive field, solely for the “exceptionally artistic”. However, the philosophy behind music education only goes to further prove the importance of the subject matter, and why everyone should be involved in some way, shape or form. Many people—from students, to teachers, to scholars have defined the philosophy of music education, and while the details vary from person to person, the overarching consensus is that music education is ultimately for the betterment of the students. At Florida State University, the music education degree program has outlined its goals for the teachers…
A vocal or instrumental soloist is similar to a performing artist and may perform in much the same ways. Solo artists usually work as contracted performers for a project or in a studio. For example, an orchestra, or a group may use this type of artist in their music. When performing as a contracted soloist, the artist has a responsibility to rehearse and perform the music as directed by the group or project leader. A session musician also knows as a studio musician, is responsible for backing up the leader of a group in the recording studio, or during a live performance.…
Todays society is surrounded by music in many different facets. The exposure comes from the growth and dependence on technology, which allows the movement of noise to any location. People take music with them in the car, to the gym, over the speaker systems of most public venues, and even in the shower. This knowledge and understanding of music is a skill that needs to be enriched in the children of today. Music opens doors and opportunities for students that don’t want to be apart of the football team or didn’t make the cheer squad.…
A child’s musical experience begins when they are at home with their parents. But music education in the school should start when the student first enrolls. When students are in elementary school, they should learn the fundamentals of music. Such as telling the difference between tempo, knowing the note on the staff and the values of the rhythmic dictation. Then as they progress through their school years they should learn the different types of genres and styles.…
