NU Personal Statement

Decent Essays
I dashed to the art room of my high school, sweat still dripped from my back. Although I had just finish a volleyball match, I still needed to make final revisions to the yearbook. Later, I would find a quiet place to complete my homework and mark down upcoming volunteer sessions in my agenda before leaving school.
I thoroughly enjoy every activity I am involved in. From leading school clubs to playing volleyball, I have learned invaluable lessons on leadership and teamwork, which has nurtured my growth as a person. For this, I am thankful of my compassionate school community, which has supported my every endeavor. My hope is to continue pursuing these passions during my undergraduate years—and Northwestern University’s community is one that will allow me to push my boundaries further.

During this time, I am also looking forward to engaging and exchange my ideas with the diverse student body. My agenda would be filled with the dates and times of first-year seminars, which I am eager to participant in. At the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, I hope to spend my freshman and sophomore years to explore the different disciplines; however, as of the current, I am highly attracted to the Biological Sciences major. In my first year, I hope to gain research experience, which is possible with NU’s grants and fellowship

High school athletics have impacted every aspect of my life, including my overall perception of myself. Personally, my entire high school career has been dedicated to cheerleading. Participating in this sport all four years of high school has provided me with opportunities to meet new people and improved leadership skills. I have learned the value of team building, dedication, responsibility, and determination. As I look back on all of the hard work, sweat and tears left on the cheerleading mats, I also recognize those who gave up their time to help me and how that has led me to help others.…

To get an understanding of the significance of interscholastic competition at the collegiate level, simply turn on the television on a Saturday morning during college football. The sponsors, fans, pageantry, etc., is astronomical and continues to grow exponentially. Undoubtedly, college athletics is “big business” and is often viewed as a separate entity. Duke professor of public policy, economics and law, Charles T. Clotfelter, offers an interesting viewpoint on college athletics, stating faculty members’ blindness to the significance of big-time sports amounts to operating in a parallel universe, which is impossible, because the evidence is all around us and so commonplace (Etizen, 2012). Its difficulty to disagree with Clotfelter because sports are deeply rooted in our society.…

Growing up in the United States the individualistic goals of our society are incredibly apparent. The whole premise of the American Dream is to do well for yourself, to raise your own family in your own home with your own car. But this dream that we have built for ourselves lacks depth and longevity. It is a simplistic, selfish, and senseless ambition. I believe, as human beings, we desire more than to help ourselves.…

As a volunteer for the RRU Peer Support Program, I planned student and community events to raise awareness around gendered violence and fundraise for the program itself. While working for the YMCA of Greater Vancouver and Douglas Park Community Centre I hosted programs, like sports tournaments and summer camps, and I helped to create a sense of community, through outreach and leadership programs. As a volunteer leader and project assistant for the Great Island Run, a fundraiser to benefit St Mary’s Hospital, I further strengthened my skills in leadership and teamwork. When I was a preteen, I was part of the Youth Leadership Development program at the Chilliwack YMCA. I went on to work for the YMCA as a gym program leader, then as a summer camp coordinator, and finally as a volunteer coordinator for the Youth Leadership program – the same program I had been a participant in.…

Over the four years I played volleyball, the sport taught me that leading the team would lead to success. Our team needed a voice to guide the team, and being that voice taught me so much. I worked hard every day to guide the team and provide an example of what hard work…

In high school, it can seem like the most important thing in life. I, fortunately, was involved in many other activities to fill up my time.
