NSO Personal Statement

Before joining NSO, I recall reading the commitment letter and contemplating if I would be able to control my emotions and “refrain from the use of profanity.” Especially since this position is a representation of the University, I was apprehensive about my temper. Chickering’s second vector is managing emotions, which consists of the ability to understand, accept, and express emotions. Challenges and group projects are inevitable; therefore, by observing the contrasting personalities of the involvement group, it was evident that we would encounter complications. Therefore, learning to understand and accept other’s emotions was a challenge. For instance, when I received criticism from Andrew regarding the brochure, I found his remarks unnecessary …show more content…
Chickering’s third vector, “movement through autonomy towards interdependence”, is characterized by independence from one’s parents, being able to take responsibility for ourselves, and learning how to be emotionally independent. By becoming involved with the campus, I immediately gained independence from my family. Since my mother is unfamiliar with the college lifestyle, my independence began from the time of my enrollment. I learned how to apply for college, scholarships, and register for classes on my own. Most importantly, it was my decision to apply for this NSO position. I wanted to improve my future by gaining experiences and skills. However, I was not going to obtain these experiences if I did not actively seek these opportunities. NSO was the first position I was determined to obtain; therefore, I attended optional orientations to become familiar with the staff, I utilized the Manoa Career Center and Student Support Services for interview advice, and rehearsed for the interview a week prior to my appointment. Before applying to NSO, I cruised through college without a purpose or any form of campus involvement. I used my religion as a crutch by believing that opportunities will appear if God intended them to enter my life. Therefore, I strolled through college hoping that God would introduce the “right” opportunities. After obtaining my position, I was amazed that I was chosen among such accomplished students. I aspired to be as accomplished as them after realizing that I too possessed the potential to inspire others. If it were not for NSO, I would have never developed such close relationships with these leaders. Therefore, NSO was the encouragement I needed to begin establishing a fulfilling college

I am a first-generation Latina student at The Ohio State University. Being from inner city Toledo, Ohio, I attended a public district where 80% of students received free or reduced lunch and the graduation rate was at an all time low of 49%. My parents had not graduated high school, therefore once college applications became relevant, they unfortunately could not help me. Through 25 different scholarships, I was able to attend OSU without any loans and truly believed I was on the right track to achieving the "American Dream". To my dismay, once classes began, I was lost.…

As an individual who was enormously pampered by her parents and greatly relied on her parents for everything throughout her life, moments that required me to become independent really pushed me to think for myself and work hard. From travelling to India alone at the age of eight to moving away for college, I had to make sure that my emotional ties to my parents wouldn’t prevent me from being independent and innovative. I refused to let life walk all over me, and instead pushed myself to overcome my fears and become my personal best. At such moments, I didn’t depend on my family to help me adjust to the new living environments, but rather took it upon myself to stay organized, plan out my day, and create my own living space. Instead of acting courageous and exclaiming how easy the transition would be, I acknowledged it would be difficult and focused more on getting myself back on my two feet.…

When I interviewed with Mount Holyoke College, the Associate Director of the Frances Perkins Scholar program, Nichole Reynolds, shared with me, “Attending this school can be a transformative experience if you allow it to be.” The words that she spoke were the guiding force behind the ways in which I approached my junior year. The 2016-2017 school year has been the most transformative year of my academic life thus far. Indeed, I stepped out of my cocoon and forced myself to stretch; no matter how uncomfortable or the amount of fear that I felt, I pushed towards new experiences that helped to construct the person I was becoming. First, after much consideration, I officially declared my self-design major in Black Geographies with the support of my academic advising team.…

While I come from an agriculturally-focused family, my interests as a young boy were divided between aviation and computers. At the age of 13, I began to focus more on my digital hobbies after a neighbor offered to assist me in learning the art of programming. During the next few years, he mentored me in software development using primarily C# with the .NET Framework. In that time, I created a collection of small personal applications and games as I experimented with code and concepts. At age 17, I became interested in interacting with the physical world through the digital one with the use of microcontrollers.…

Compassion and tolerance is key to being a nurse. There is no point of caring for other human beings especially those who are ill, if you can not be CARING. Nurses are just as important as any physician, just because they didn't earn a PhD, nurses are still just as helpful as any doctor in the medical field.…

In order for a student development to occur, a student must be able to learn to control their emotions, whether they be positive, intense, or even disruptive (Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005, p. 21). During my undergraduate college experience, I was presented with many situations that forced me to learn how to handle my emotions. As I look back at my undergraduate years, I can see how I have learned to better handle emotions like anger, jealous, anxiety, shame, or any other negative emotion that I encountered. I have to admit that during my first two years of college, I did not have a good handle of my emotions.…
