At age 10, I decided what I wanted to carry out with my life: to enlist in the Marine Corps. This choice remained with me throughout my educational years. Ultimately, my plan was to enlist in the Marines after High School to serve the nation. At the time, it sounded like a splendid plan to be able to do what I was extremely passionate about. Initially, I was very narrow-minded about career choices and that joining the military after High School was the best option for me. I failed to obtain notice of the opportunities that were offered to me until later in my senior year. During senior year, I became interested in the possibility of attending college, but also to be apart of our great Armed Forces. I asked myself, “How was this possible?” …show more content…
After countless hours of researching, I learned that this option allows selected individuals to go to college that would be covered by the $180,000 awarded amount, in return for 4 to 6 years of serving our country as an officer. My eyes lit up as I read through this description. Going forward with this information, I signed up for the SAT for the first time and also began working on my numerous college applications. Through the midst of all this, I made sure to work on the NROTC application as well. Although the NROTC scholarship is very competitive, I am working on improving myself. To qualify for the NROTC, I must pass a physical demanding test and have a great SAT score. My physique is currently in great shape, nevertheless, I’m currently working on my academic studies to enhance my application. As a kid who lived his life from age 10 to 16 thinking he would be going to the military after school, I never imagined thinking any other way. It’s difficult, however, I am continuing to pursue what I’m after: to be able to give back to veterans who gave it their all and the chance to serve this beautiful country as an

My father and I had grown apart, but slowly were reconnecting over the years of disconnect and resentment. I was investing all my time into JROTC, slowly advancing in my cadet career into a snapshot of my future military career. My vision started to fail on mile four of the six-mile hike. Small white specks flickered across my field of vision. I should have stopped myself, but all I could think was: you will finish this, or you will die trying.…

My interest in the Naval Academy and the fleet began as just another college option. I have not had any family member serve in the Navy and was rather indifferent to military service, other than my admiration for the men and women who serve. As I continued to explore my options, the Naval Academy remained on the backburner until I visited for the summer STEM program two years ago. As soon as I first walked on post, I instantly knew I loved it--the beautiful old architecture, the shimmering blue water, and the white-clad Midshipmen marching crisply down Stribbling. This past summer, when I visited again for NASS, I decided the Naval Academy was the one for me.…

Having the honor to serve in the Army is one of the most rewarding vocations I can think of. Not only will I be protecting the people of this nation, but also I will be defending it’s virtues, and upholding the tenets that make America truly great, namely freedom. I have always considered myself a true Patriot, and attending West Point and serving my country will prove the extent of my patriotism. My entire life, as short as that may seem to some, I have striven to better myself, improve my core values and sharpen my mental strength. As a younger adult achieving the rank of Eagle in scouting helped me focus on these efforts.…

Stanley McChrystal suggests in his essay, Lincoln’s Call to Service – and Ours, that a program be created called, Universal National Service. This program will create millions of jobs for individuals between the ages of 18 to 28. McChrystal believes that this program “will change the current cultural expectation that service is only the duty of those in uniform” (564). I agree with the need for such a program and feel that it would greatly benefit our country. If this program is created it will allow young individuals to get a feel for military life.…

While researching more, I did find out that I did qualify for something, and that I would get a part time job with them just to get my foot inside while I wait until hopefully the day would come. My next attempt would’ve been within the APD Police Service Aide.…

REBUTTAL Military recruiters should target students, and by target, it means providing career information about the military who otherwise would not be considered. Students are distracted by all the technology that is constantly bombarding them with all kinds of choice. Some students feel overwhelmed by all the choice these days. Students from all walks of life are seeking their place in society and these same students are allowing other people to make their serious decision for them. These decisions could prove harmful over time because the ideas that encouraged a young adult’s decision in the beginning, may make the individual feel as if they made the wrong choice and therefore regret some or most of their life.…
