1) The coach had the ideals that the value of the team as a whole was far more valuable than one individual player. The team followed the same path as the “Part of the House” tale where each member realized the value of the system as a whole and eventually came to support it. First, the idea of systems thinking is introduced when the head coach plans to run his team off of a combination of the Russian and Canadian teams’ approach where each player serves a specific purpose. Next, the principles of systems thinking is shown at the beginning of the movie when the coach is choosing the roster of the team. The head coach chooses the players based on the way they fit into his designed system not whether or not they’re the most skilled. The coach faces a lot of ridicule on this approach as it is a new system in American hockey. Next, the systematic approach is shown to be advantageous when the NHL All-star team loses to the Soviet Union team. The NHL team has a lot of talent but they don’t work well as a team, and the Soviet Union team has a structured system that they rely upon. As stated in number one while the NHL all-star team lost to the Soviet Union, a team of college hockey players beat the soviet team. Also, after the players bought into the systematic approach they formed better chemistry and became a “family.” At the beginning of the movie many of the players have negative feelings for each other since they played against each other during college. However, later in the movie the players grew closer together and had a Christmas party and exchanged gag gifts. Even during the short time frame of the Olympics the team grew closer together.
