NFPA 1600: A Case Study

Decent Essays
As the new safety director for the acquired hospital the first thing to do would be a full review of the emergency program. The standard that I deem the most helpful is to use the NFPA 1600. Even though the hospital did not have a safety director, I would meet with whoever was in charge of developing the program to gain a better understanding of the previous processes. Then the program will need reviewed to see if it is up to date and that all employees are properly trained on what is included in the program. The local emergency responders will also be contacted to ensure they are up to speed and have a copy of the emergency plan.
If the plan was deemed unworthy I would conduct a risk assessment of the new facility. The risk assessment should

You asked the following question: “We are currently working on a NFPA 13R designed building that has an open and attached porte-cochere. The AHJ follows the 2007 edition of this standard. In section 6.9.5 of NFPA 13R (2007 Edition) sprinklers are not required in any porches, balconies, corridors, and stairs that are open and attached. Porte-cocheres are not specifically listed in this section, but I would assume the reason for not requiring protection for the specifically noted items above would also apply for open and attached porte cocheres.…

As of 2013, only 10 states made facilities mandate a SPHP (ANA, 2013). Education is of most importance to ensure workers safety. I would also ensure that care plans or care-care for the individual patients were made readily available to all staff prior to any patient care. All facilities have a Safety meeting held, whether it is weekly, monthly or quarterly, floor staff need to be made a part of that meeting/committee. I would also do “pop-up” rounds to ensure that the staff on the floor are compliant with using equipment (2-person transfer), using gait belt when ambulating or transferring a patient and using a draw sheet while turning/repositioning or lifting up in…

This decentralization also leads to other challenges in the prehospital environment. One issue that needs to be addressed is interstate travel for interfacility transfers and EMS responders going out of state for disaster response. Many questions arise when prehospital providers travel out of the region, into another state’s jurisdictions. Who is responsible for medical oversight of state? If a different medical director is responsible, do they assume liability?…

Being in charge of a 250 bed community hospital is a lot of responsibility and it is something that can not be done alone. The first thing you would need to do is build a strong committee in order to help you through the process of making sure the hospital is safe and up to code for not only the employees safety but also the safety of your patients and family members coming through your door. Once you have your committee together this is really when you hit the ground running, and having each individual assigned to a certain area of the hospital to evaluate and make rounds to find all of the “unsafe” or potentially “unsafe” things within the hospital. After the evaluation from each of the assigned members in your committee, you need to then…

What’s more, risk assessment is being applied to address broader environmental problems. Regarding traditional ways of risk assessment, there may be no approach to reduce risk except analysis. Traditional process can end with no risk-reduction actions at all. Moreover, in a traditional risk assessment module, allotted time will easily exhaust and cause unnecessary loss. In addition, it will change the consequence of the contributions of risk managers and solutions to issues will not be firstly raised.…
