NDSU Study Abroad Essay

Personally, as a Fargo native, the study abroad experience through North Dakota State University (NDSU) would be so much more than just a trip. Since my junior in high school, I have experienced life at a dead sprint. Building my resume, preparing myself for my career, taking in as much knowledge as I can, and setting hefty goals for myself have been my primary focus. Due to this immense effort, I will achieve my four-year degree in only three years. My high school afforded me the opportunity to take many AP classes, and this past summer, I took college courses in order to meet the graduation requirements. To me, the NDSU study abroad trip would be the capstone of my college career and the opportunity of a lifetime.

Studying abroad would be personally fulfilling to me. I have never left the continent, and it has always been a prominent goal of mine. My grandfather once told me to take advantage of any opportunity to see a new part of the world, and that statement has stuck with me. Money does not grow on trees and I can’t travel everywhere. However, I know I

There are some lessons you simply cannot learn in the classroom, and I would love to gain an education in a completely different part of the world. I have read about World War II, studied it, and I took the test. However, nothing compares to seeing and experiencing where it all went down. As a business student, I feel as though it would be extremely interesting and valuable to understand how the European Union rebuilt its businesses and structure after a devastating war. Thus far, in my academic career, I’ve learned about a topic and then I’ve been tested on it. In contrast, the study abroad experience will allow me to learn about a topic, and then experience it and see it for myself. The idea of this type of hands-on learning opportunity is fascinating, exciting, and is sure to stretch my comfort

I can clearly see myself walking the University of Delaware campus. This school was the first college I saw. Ever since I visited UD when I was a little girl, I would imagine myself being just like one of the college kids when I grew up. I think that the location is perfect for me because Delaware is not too far from New Jersey so I will be able to visit home on occasion. I believe that the size of the school may leave me a bit stretched.…

The ability to travel abroad has gained not only popularity in the past decade, but has become much more accessible to the average student. This newfound availability has had both positive and negative effects. In Anthony Ogden’s article, “The View from the Veranda: Understanding Today’s Colonial Student” he discusses that with the rise of American students traveling abroad to continue their education, they are expecting the same conveniences offered at their destinations. Ogden calls these students ‘Colonial Students’ stating that they are a group of students who, “…wants to be abroad and take full advantage of all the benefits studying abroad offers, but is not necessarily open to experiencing the less desirable side of being there” (Ogden…

I am completing the 3+2 Human and Organizational Development / Masters in Nursing program, and this accelerated path requires students to finish all undergraduate requirements within three years. Thus, studying abroad for a semester was never an option. I considered going abroad after freshman or sophomore year, but I decided to gain nonprofit management skills working for an organization called Carolina Cross Connection in rural North Carolina. Although I haven’t gone abroad in college, I have prioritized getting to know people from different backgrounds than my own through Alternative Spring Break, VUcept, and other organizations on campus. All of my experiences thus far have been incredible, but I still have a lingering desire to actually leave the United States and delve into another culture as an independent entity.…

As discussed previously, I have always wanted to travel abroad, but in the past, it has always been difficult for me to do so. Within the next two years, I plan on studying abroad at a foreign campus. I personally am leaning towards a more western country such as Italy or Australia. However, I am hesitant to study in countries such as these as it may take away from the experience if I was to study in a country so similar to my home country so I have also considered locations quite different than the United States, such as China or I think Russia may also be a great place if I was able to organize…
