NCWIT Project Reflection

Improved Essays
Technical skills that were utilized in the creation of this project was familiarity with App Inventor, waterfall methodology, and campaigning. We designed what the program would look like before we implemented it based on NCWIT AspireIT program requirements.

The first phase was deciding how to maximize the amount of participant involvement through the campaign. I created a website template to be applied to our site (sisterhood.zone) and updated details on the NCWIT portal pertaining to the program as needed. I constantly shared and updated our Sisterhood ReCoded Facebook page while spreading word by mouth about the program. I visited the John Glenn Middle School with Regina and Jay and spoke with approximately 200 students in a forum setting.

This event was held at Eastern Randolph high school in Ramseur, North Carolina. This is a small school surrounded primarily by agriculture and Ramseur is a small town of less than 2,000. The community members are mostly alumni of the school and have had generations attend Eastern. Because of this connection, the community is big supporters of school athletic events and other performances.…

Through my courses, I have learned about research being done that involves generating and processing large sets of data, which require the assistance of outside facilities such INBRE, and have noticed a growing demand for people who understand the techniques necessary to process such data. However, there is limited resource available at university to learn such techniques, which is why I’m excited to learn more about the techniques at the internship. I am currently working in Dr.Cripps lab where I screen for transcriptional regulators of adult myogenesis in Drosophila by RNAi, and determine transcriptional factors of extradentin; my research has led me to dabble in the use of position weight matrices in the prediction of such factors, and I…

Communication is of essential importance in any workplace, relationship, and gathering, which creates efficient leadership within a group. Towards the closing of my junior year, I was elected to be one of the few student board members to my school’s National Honor Society. Achieving board member status for this renowned society of students is an eye-opening experience. Adapting to the responsibility that a highly respected board member carries of such a prestigious group truly distinguishes differences between the ordinary member and those who collectively lead the organization. From coordinating induction ceremonies for incoming members, to communicating with local providers for community service events, being a representative of…

The “Ban the Box” movement was started by the civil rights movement group “All of Us or None,” in 2004. The initial goal of the movement is to have the portion of a formal job application that asks about criminal history removed. As of 2015, nineteen states have removed the question regarding conviction history from job applications. Alabama has yet to join the other nineteen states in following the “Ban the Box” movement. As a way to do more in the community, I volunteered with Planned Parenthood in their community efforts to engage a wider audience through their voter registration drive. First I contacted Grace Miller, Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas’ Austin Community Outreach Specialist, to be a part of their upcoming events. I volunteered to head the Planned Parenthood table for the Foundation Communities Health Fair and 2 Mile Walk event on November 5th. Prior to the community event, I needed to meet with Grace and collect the pick up the Planned Parenthood Tabling supplies. This included a table, a number of informative brochures, event freebies (sunglasses, stickers, pens etc.)…

One of the most important components of community based research is ensuring that your research is being conducted in a way that is empowering the community and is relevant to the needs of the community. Ensuring that community based research is designed in an empowering way is especially important because often this type of research is conducted in vulnerable communities that have experienced various levels of discrimination. In Meredith Minker and Nina Wallerstein’s Community-Based Participatory Research for Health: From Process to Outcomes, there are several case studies, which include a plethora of best practices. For the purposes of this paper, I have chosen two case studies from the aforementioned book, which I feel best demonstrate how…

Each day between the ten in the morning to twelve we would go around the area and give breakfast out to whoever wanted. Originally it was challenging to keep doing it because no one would ever say that they actually wanted the help but over time people slowly began comfortable with being helped. However as I went through the program I began to see how not everyone is not as fortunate as you and it feels good to give back to people your age older and also younger. As I completed the programs over the summer my eyes were opened up to see what is really out there in “the real world”.…

Campaigns try to lure in supporters using important topics such as money, jobs and laws, but people forget about other issues that can also affect themselves and their families. There are many campaigns that want to change society and to help the community around them. A controversial topic that has the ability to change the United States is the legalization of drugs. Even now, drugs play big part in the economy and the lives of the targeted audiences. My campaign will attempt to change the views of those who do not think legalizing marijuana can help the economy.…
