When it came to the choices you made per Table 12.2 of our text, I felt they were good selections. With both of your selections, “I have no biases” and “There is too much emphasis on being politically correct” they are able to tie into standard 2, Self-Awareness, of the NASW Standards of Cultural Competency. Much like you said, it is important that as social workers, we are able to practice self-awareness. It is our responsibility as case workers to work beyond whatever biases a client may hold in order to do our job and not to bring awareness to the client of these biases. We must respect them. As Garthwait (2014) states, “Acknowledge to your client that you recognize the differences that separate you, and show your appreciation for their struggles by validating their experiences and perspectives” (pp. 130). This ties into your second selection over political correctness. Being aware that anything politically stated can be taken negatively or positively depending on the audience is important. The NASW Standards of Cultural Competency (2015) states, “Social workers should promote conditions that encourage respect for cultural and social diversity within the United States and globally” (pp. 17). Being respectful of client’s political beliefs is an important task when it comes to political correctness, as it enables us to gain a better understanding of where a client may stand.
