Freeze drying has been traced back to the 15th century, the Inca’s put food in storage higher than Machu Picchu. The cold weather froze the food and then the low pressure of the air from the high altitude took all the water vapor out of the food. Since that time, freeze drying has been used for the preservation of many different things. NASA used freeze drying to make the astronauts favorite food, freeze dried ice cream. Today, people are still freeze drying food, the benefit is you can keep it frozen for years and years, then when you want to eat it, all you have to do put it in a warm area so that the food will be revitalized. This makes freeze dried food a perfect option for people that are camping and hiking as well as those people that are storing food for a potential future food shortage (a.k.a Doomsday preppers). In addition, there are many other things that can be freeze dried like, flowers, pharmaceuticals and pet foods. The possibilities are potentially endless for the future use of freeze drying
