The United States became concerned because the USSR put up Sputnik, which was a rocket built out of an emptied out casing from an intercontinental ballistic missile. That was a signal to America that Russia could very possibly get to the Moon and control high ground, something that the United States could not allow to happen. So we enacted NASA to get to the moon first. Then in 1969, when we finally land on the moon space enthusiasts estimated that we would land on Mars in another 10 years.
