The first article I chose to analyze is titled “NASA STUDYING 2015 El Nino As Never Before,” by Kasha Patel. The article explains what the weather pattern known as El Nino is, the effects it has on the climate, why NASA wants to study it, and how NASA plans on studying it. Now NASA has advanced satellites that can monitor more aspects of the weather pattern such as sea level and sea surface temperature. The reason NASA is so interested in the weather pattern this year is because it is expected to be one of the largest patterns since 1998, and now they have the technology to study it in a way they have never been able to do before.

This claim was backed up by statistics gathered by NASA that the Pacific ocean was warmer than usual along with a side by side visual comparison of the temperature of the Pacific ocean taken by satellite from 1998 and 2015. The claims and evidence given by Patel is not personal research, but rather research from NASA, which reduces the chance of biased writing.
A fact-based piece of writing makes it difficult to determine “who” the writer is as a person. The voice of the writer in this article is more reportive than expressive. Patel did not offer opinions or voice feelings about the topic, but instead just cited facts and reported information. In other words Patels purpose for writing this article was to inform or educate rather than to persuade or entertain. The audience Patel is writing to is a very general audience, because this is something that affects many people, and Patel wants to inform those people. The writing style was not too advanced so that ordinary people could not understand it. For example rather than being highly scientific and specific, Patel defined this complex weather pattern as “a natural short-term climate change event” that is caused by an increase in temperature in the Pacific
