Veteran with mental health illnesses especially posttraumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) is a group that interests me. Young men and women answer the call to service. They serve to defend our country and to defend people who are unable to defend themselves .After deployment these soldiers are plagued with images that haunt them for the rest of their lives, unable to function, unable to fit back into society, locked in an internal war of their own. They are now vulnerable. These veterans need more than medication they need support and someone to defend them. A strong voice to advocate not only on their behalf, but also on behalf of those they live with. After researching organization, that is veteran friendly, I selected the North Carolina Alliance …show more content…

My questions were answered and the secretary was eager to help after explaining my assignment. I was then referred to Hannah Carroll, the president and to their web site. A message was left for her that I was interested in the group. I also left a personal message for her. After receiving information and reading information about NAMI Cumberland, I realized that I did not know all the resources that were available in Fayetteville. For the last 23 years being a military dependent military and after retirement, the military hospital, and the Veteran Administration hospital was always the first and main resources used. I have also been volunteering with a local nonprofit organization that provide, food housing, shelter, and financial help to veterans. Being there, I have not heard the name of NAMI mentioned. Every day we see distraught mentally unstable veterans. I brought this this the board’s and asked that the board members sign up for one of NAMI training

As a lifelong resident of the Napa Valley I have always admired Clinic OLE'S dedication to the community. For many of us in the community "La Clinica Ole" was the only medical resource available, not only for its affordability, but also from a cultural/language comfort aspect. The doctors and staff were the only ones that offered the community a safe place where they could be cared for. It has been wonderful to witness how Clinic Ole has developed over the years, from a small traveling operation to its current sites and multiple locations. I understand the demand is still high and the need for expansion is still needed, and I would like to be part of it and help the organization meet its goals.…

Mental Health Services in Rural America According to the Veteran’s Health Administration, “more than one-half of all the counties in the United States do not have a psychologist, a psychiatrist, or mental health social worker” (Veteran’s Health Administration Office of Rural Health (VHA-ORH), 2013, p. 1). More than 85% of areas with mental health shortages are in rural areas (VHA-ORH, 2013). In addition to these staggering statistics, it is known that rural residents have higher rates of depression, substance abuse, domestic violence, poverty, and suicide than people who live in urban areas (Rainer, 2012). Considering these facts, it is imperative that rural communities increase the availability of mental health services, especially crisis…

As the number of homeless people in the country keeps growing, we wonder what is being done or what has been done to improve this social issue. For most people, when they hear the word homeless they imagine a person that sleeps on a sidewalk, under a tent, or under a bridge. We often fail to realize that the definition of homelessness goes beyond what we imagine. According to the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, a homeless person or family is someone who lacks a fixed regular residence (HUD Exchange, 2009); which can be someone who sleeps in a place not meant for human habitation. The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act also states that a homeless person or family is also someone who sleeps in a privately or publicly temporary shelter or in a hotel or motel that is being paid by federal, state, or other government programs.…
