As a Nursing assistant (NA) you will be the eyes and ears for the healthcare team caring for a person with sickle cell anemia. The NA will watch for episodes of pain, abnormal skin color, complaints of chest pain and skin breakdown. All of these findings should be reported to the nurse immediately. When a person with this disease has a “crisis”, episode of pain, it can be very frightening, therefore the NA should be there to help the patient get the correct care. The NA should also be there to provide comfort, show empathy and compassion.
