Myths: The Relationship Between Religion And Mythology

Myths are known as the oldest and most influential of all story forms. They are solely stories that allow individuals to obtain a relationship with their universe, environment, and the passing of time. Therefore, the word myth is generally used to give the official view of creation or another a way to explain an important message for a culture or group natural events. Myths were passed on by the spoken word, and their function was to explain, to teach lessons, and to entertain. In contrast, in the academic context, Leonard & McClure, 2015 states that “Myths are ancient narratives that attempt to answer the enduring and fundamental human questions: How did the universe and the world come to be? First, religion and mythology teach lessons that allow us to decipher what is right from wrong and how to conduct ourselves and not too. Overall, religion and mythology allow us to acquire knowledge and assurance, and in return, leads us to believe in something. Mythology, on the other hand, is known as a major component of religion. This is because saints are often allied religious past with their folklores, in addition to the rituals associated with their festivals. Therefore, as noted by Edward, 2004, “mythology and religion are blended harmoniously and often inextricably linked” (Pg. 114). Mythology and religion diversion stems from when a myth differs from its original meaning and alters away from the sacred significance into a folktale. I am a believer in God, who strongly believe that prayer can help in any situation. Whether it is saying a personal prayer to your God or reading the Bible or spiritual book, these are practices that often assist human being to cope with change, suffering, loss, and death.
