In The Bacchae many of the things said and done by Dionysus are similar to Jesus in The Bible. Proof of this is seen in the human way they live on Earth, the unusual ways they were born and conceived, both gods are called twice born, their want of people to believe that they are gods, their ability to turn people and objects into different items, the fear for their lives they had as infants, the lack of struggle when they are arrested, and finally their persecution. Therefore if Dionysus is like Jesus is he, Dionysus, superior to all the other gods? In the Bacchae Dionysus is at Thebes at the palace of Pentheus.…

For one, with the conceiving of the god, also came the parturition of wine, a coinage that dwells to this day. Wine is the archetypal specimen of the excellent and twisted characteristics humans have retained for centuries.…

At the end of the summary, Dionysus names Pentheus saying, “I will demonstrate to him, and to all of Thebes, that I am a god” and if necessary “will join that [Bacchants] army” in order to protect those whom he has helped. Dionysus gives off a definite feeling of anger and determination at this point. But he then changes his tune and says that when his task is complete he will “join them[Bacchants] in their holy dance” (pg. 193), which leads into the chorus’s opinion of him. The chorus describes Dionysus as the “god of laughter” (pg. 193), the “spirit of revel and rapture” (pg. 194), and the “god of joy” (pg. 196). Other characters also describe him similarly at first, and in some cases, they use the exact same words.…

The female figure that he leans on is standing on a block that is almost at his mid-calf, yet she still only reaches his chest, just tall enough for him to rest his arm on her head. If the block she stands on was to be removed and she was to stand at the same ground level as Dionysus, she would literally be half of his height. This inhumanly height of his, hierarchy of scale is the first definitive marker of a deity. Dionysus rests his arm on top of the female figure’s head (which further emphasizes his bigness), his hand gesturing outwards, which seems to be a welcoming gesture or a gesture to address a crowd. His left hand unfortunately did not survive, but one of the most distinctive characteristics of Dionysus is the Thyrsos, a…
