Mythological Heroes & New Age Heroes
It can be rather difficult to pinpoint what a hero is. “defining a hero” By Peter R. Stillman, tells us a hero is a male who is to “overcome the weakness and temptations we give in to…” (para.3). However, Joseph Campbell throughout The Power of Myth tells us that heroes can be a plethora of beings, such as a mother or a child; “Giving birth is a heroic deed... The mother as a hero.”(125). Can a hero truly be just anyone from an old myth to a parent or even a well respected human in this new age society?

Both Stillman and Campbell tell us these characteristics, which is what helps us recognize our hero to be heroic. Countless mythological and modern day heroes have those characteristics. There are so many excellent modern day heroes. Such as Nelson Mandela, JK Rowling, Martin Luther King jr., Emma Watson, Yoko Ono, and many more. Personally a hero should stand up for basic human rights and respect the world we live in. Which is why my hero is Bernie Sanders.
Bernie Sanders might not have won the 2016 elections, but he does stand up for basic human rights and respects the world we live in.
