Laurence suggests that despite the personality someone is born with, how they are raised and any significant early life trauma endured can later result in misplaced anger, devious behaviours, and a continuation in the cycle of abuse. Initially, the main character, fifteen year old Vanessa, was quite sheltered and naive.…

I enjoyed reading this story as I have a weakness for romance novels and I feel this played as one. As the story begins a valley is described that is quiet, has animals, and people. This valley being called the Sleepy Hallows and the boys of this valley being called the sleepy hallow boys. The valley has witchcraft within it as previous events by an Indian chief. The witchcraft in valley influences the people as the text states “the place still continues under the sway of some witching power, that holds a spell over the minds of the good people, causing them to walk in a continual reverie.”…

These stories have been collected by white immigrant people from native tellers (similar to the Joe Hayes or Joel Chandler Harris situation) or collected by native Africans who have been educated in English by white immigrant audiences. Where do you see the English-speaking, European influences? What instructions would you give to these collectors in order to get accurate stories? This question is similar to the one asked about Joe Hayes, the Anglo who collects Mexican fairy tales.
