The Myth of Thought Leadership
So, the first thing that is important to know about the concept of thought leadership and the idea of being a thought leader is that it's all in your head. It's an idea. It's a concept. I don't know who the first person to call themselves a 'thought leader' was, but the concept of being a thought leader exists in concept only.
According to Google trends, the term 'thought leader' is not searched enough outside of the United States for them to report.
And outside of the United States, the term 'thought leadership' is only searched enough for them to report it in the U.K. and India.

If you haven't heard Senator Rubio's speech, he talked about the uncivil unrest sweeping this nation, and he challenged the Senate to be the leaders this nation needs.
I encourage Senator Marco Rubio and every member of the United States Senate to remember their positions are positions of servant leadership. I would like to remind every person reading this who brands themselves as a thought leader that they have a responsibility to lead well. In every aspect of life. And that means before you brand yourself as a thought leader, to lead well you must brand yourself as a servant leader.

Now, if you're going to brand yourself as any type of leader, it is important to brand yourself well. A leader is not just someone with a large following and a lot of strong opinions. A leader of any type is someone who not only conducts themselves well in public but also in private. A leader is someone who not only knows how to lead a team but also their families (if they have one to lead) and themselves.
