The Lonely Lady Greek mythology has many strange explanations of natural phenomena that also teach moral lessons. The myth of Penelope shows us that bravery can go unnoticed because it is considered average. Penelope waits for Odysseus and she is being brave by taking care of everything while he is gone, but she says that only his bravery will be noticed because he is a hero that went on a great journey. Artist John Williams Waterhouse and poet Dorothy Parker portrayed this closer to today's society. In the painting Penelope and the Suitors ,J.W. Waterhouse uses the myth of Penelope to show that people's arrogance can cause tense situations, while in her poem “Penelope”, Dorothy Parker uses that same scene to show that most bravery goes unnoticed …show more content…
Odysseus is being called brave for going on an adventure and being a hero. This is unfair because Penelope is working everything while he is gone. When the sea is described as “glittering” which is peaceful. It is peaceful because Penelope is home while Odysseus is gone and the sea and her surroundings are creating a very peaceful mood. Penelope is also doing everything that has to be done at their home, and her surroundings are helping her be optimistic and patient. The entire poem could be described as peaceful yet bitter. This is because the world is astounding and beautiful, but she is bitter because she is being completely ignored because of her husband being a hero. Dorothy Parker is a very famous poet that is well remembered for her wit and amazing poetry, short stories ,and movies. Dorothy was born August 22nd 1893 On the upper west side …show more content…

Joseph Campbell once said, ”the cave you most fear to enter holds the treasure you seek”. This ideology of confronting one 's inner fears through obstacles and becoming more powerful each time, propel the hero of the story to become an epic hero at the end of their journeys of self-discovery. Odysseus in The Odyssey recited by Homer was certainly not exempt from the title of ‘Epic Hero’ due to his skills and his sympathizable traits’ and his fantastical adventures. While some may say The Odyssey is a tale of Odysseus piecing his life together, Odysseus is an epic hero nonetheless for his divine physical and mental abilities, with a wide appeal for his traditional Greek traits such as his yearning for his family and faith. “Odysseus’ Journey” The epic poem we all know shows much detail of struggles that is being thrown at the ‘Teller of Tales’ Odysseus. “The Odyssey” by Homer shows that Odysseus goes through so many things to get back home to his wife Penelope on the land of Ithaca, but which part is most importantly impacted on the hero? A hero’s qualities are most defined by his journey and adventure, not the end of it. Through the book, beginning to end Odysseus mostly shows Loyalty, Intelligence and Leadership.…

A good man would just ask Icarius, Penelope’s father, for her hand in marriage instead of acting this way, in my opinion. One of the suitors named Antinous blames everything on Penelope, which I do not agree with. He says that she attracts every suitor in, but never actually commits to just one. Then my mother says that she will marry once she finishes weaving a shroud for her father-in-law named Laertes, but every single night she undid the work she had done during the daytime so it would never be finished. That way, she could remain unmarried.…

The word “grief” shares many similarities to “sadness”, but just as both terms are used to describe a state of unhappiness, to be grieving carries with it connotations of a deeper-rooted pain stemming from the mourning of a loss, or an emotional loyalty to the subject of the grief. The characters in the Greek epic The Odyssey are no strangers to grief, as it is a word woven throughout the text both physically and as an underlying theme. Just as the heroes of the Trojan War long for home, the women they left behind pine for their missing loved ones through constant articulation of grief, bouts of weeping, and sometimes even the need of literal unconsciousness in order to forget their pain. For the wives of The Odyssey, the amount of grief they…

In The Odyssey, Penelope is the leading cause for Odysseus’ desire to return home. She is the reason he fights and travels through such a peril journey in order to get home. Although Odysseus’ wife, Penelope, didn't give in and marry one of them, it still made Odysseus really mad. Trying to marry his wife showed the suitors disrespect for Odysseus. If Penelope would have married one of the suitors, Odysseus wouldn't have been king anymore. On the other hand, Odysseus probably could have settled the problem without killing all of them. Odysseus didn't have to kill the suitors to get rid of them.…
