Myth Behind The Dragon Research Paper

I chose the constellation Draco for the reason that I just love dragons, as well as the myth behind the specific dragon that the constellation represents. That dragon is called Ladon, and he was a more serpent like dragon, with multiple heads, although stories disagree about how many exactly. The constellation is located in the northern sky, and is a circumpolar constellation, meaning it never sets below the horizon for many observers in the north.

Hercules defeated Ladon on a quest to retrieve a golden apple from the tree Ladon guarded in the garden of the Hesperiedes. This quest was one of Hercules’s ten labors (which later became twelve). In some accounts, Ladon is the brother of the Nemean Lion, which Hercules also defeated. Some accounts

Ladon was sleeping, but if he was woken by some other than Aegle, Zoe’s sister, or the bright sunlight, his instincts would kick in. Zoe slowly back towards the stream, keeping her eyes on Ladon. She didn’t notice the man creeping towards Ladon until she bumped into him. She gasped quietly, putting her hand over her mouth. She stumbled backwards, tripping over the man’s foot and falling into the stream. She looked up, water dripping from her bangs, and saw a man with an enormous lion skin draped over his shoulders. His eyes widened for a moment, than he reached out his hand to help Zoe up. He began to say something, but Zoe clapped her hand over his mouth and hissed in his ear, “Do you want to get killed?” The man shook his head. Zoe removed her hand. Zoe led the man away from Ladon ever so quietly, and when they were far enough away Zoe asked him, “What are you doing here? Do you want my father to catch you? I can tell you are a demigod. He does not like demigods, and he will kill you if Ladon does not first.” The man laughed softly. “I am Hercules! I have bested a thousand beasts. Surely a dragon would not be harder than a Chimera, or a Hydra?” Zoe shook her head. “You are foolish. I sense you mean to take an apple. My sisters will not allow that to happen.” Hercules frowned. “Do you have any weapons? I had to leave mine behind to climb up the cliff to get here. And you never told me your name, little one.” Zoe pulled a jewel-encrusted comb out of her hair, letting it tumble down her shoulders. She flipped it over in her palm a few times. “I am Zoe, one of the Hesperides. I do not think I can help you get past Ladon; he has never trusted me. But I can give you this.” She handed him the clip. As it touched his palm, it grew into a bronze sword with a leather hilt and an inscription on the blade of ancient unreadable runes. “This is the only

My favorite constellation is the Cetus or 'whale' because I think it looks more like a frying pan than a whale. The Cetus is a constellation made up of 88 stars and the brightest star is called Deneb Kaitos. The Cetus is very close to the other zodiac constellations such as Aries, Pisces and Aquarius. The creation story of the Cetus constellation stems from Greek mythology. In this story the Cetus is called a Sea Monster and not a whale.…

The tale of a hero is one of the most classic of stories, told in various forms throughout the ages. Every hero, classical and modern, has different strengths, weaknesses, and challenges that they demonstrate and face along the way, exhibiting traits that prove them a hero. While there is no doubt that the central figures of the Greek myths of Perseus, Hercules, and Atalanta are all heroes, Hercules, strong both in will and physically, stands as the best example of a classic hero. Heroes are not made without challenges, some of which they face early on in their journey. Hercules and Atalanta meet their first struggle as children, with the goddess Hera sending the former “two great snakes [that] came crawling into the nursery” (Hamilton 228), which Hercules promptly kills, and the latter being “left on a wild mountainside to die of cold and hunger” (Hamilton 246) by her father.…

It is here that all semblances of youthful hubris melt away. There is no boasting to be had, only solemn acceptance of the dire circumstances. That his opponent is a dragon, of all creatures it may have been, is of particular import. Margaret Goldsmith suggests that the dragon’s shape is that of the devil and as such represents pride and greed (83). I am in wholehearted agreement that the serpent is metaphor for avarice; however I will contend that its relation to hubris and rapacity stems from the various cultural notions that dragons are inherently conceited treasure hoarders, and not that its form is somewhat reptilian.…

One of the most well known constellation is "Cancer" also known more commonly as "the crab". I have chosen this stunning pattern of stars because I myself am i cancer as my horoscope and find it quite beautiful even though it is one of the dimmest constellations which can't be seen with the naked eye. But if you were to look for this lovely constellation you would be searching for an upside down Y right next to the constellations of Leo and Gemini. If you want to see this constellation the best and only time to see it in the northern hemisphere is in early spring and in the southern hemisphere in the autumn. the sign only comes out in these times because it is considered one of the four cardinal signs that signify the passage from one season to the next.…
