Myself Pseudolistening In Class

Decent Essays
The form of nonlistening that I engage in most frequently is pseudolistening. I find myself habitually pseudolistening in class, and many times at my place of employment, also.
I have a three hour class on Tuesdays, and I find it tough to stay alert and focused. Many times, I act like I am paying attention and listening to the instructor’s lectures. However, I am thinking about things such as; what I am going to do when I get home, or upcoming due dates. When I find myself pseudolistening, I attempt to refocus myself, but usually “lack of effort” takes over.
Not only do I find myself partaking in pseudolistening in class, but also when I am at work. My job title is a server, and therefore, interactions with guests is a must. Every now and

In his article “In Defense of Distraction”, Sam Anderson does not recommend abandoning our culture of distraction. He has a unique way of viewing the battle between concentration and focus: “Focus is a paradox—it has distraction built into it. The two are symbiotic; they’re the systole and diastole of consciousness.” Distraction is not an epidemic or a fatal flaw, nor is it something to immediately accept and embrace. Focus and distraction balance each other out, and you cannot have one without the other.…

For this sociological experiment I broke the norm that led to the ¨personal bubble¨ rule, by getting, “too close¨ to strangers when I talk to them by society's standards. This social norm shows that people are used to having their own space and not having others be within a certain distance. When you talk or interact with another person you both are in control of the personal space given. This leads to me testing others by stepping over boundaries to make them feel uncomfortable, nervous, or embarrassed.…

This technique is having a silent band rehearsal. During a silent rehearsal, the students are not allowed to talk in any way, shape or form to each other or to the director. Likewise, the band director can not speak to the students, but she can write things on the board or give hand motions in order to communicate with the students. This silence rehearsal, in my opinion, is very effective because the students are forced to pay attention to everything the band director is doing. It also calms the students down and keeps the classroom under…

I have always had a bad habit of violating social norms whether it be raising my hand to use the bathroom, making loud noises in public, being completely silent when near close friends, or holding the door open at in awkward distance, or in awkward positions. One of my favorite social norms to break has always been awkward eye contact, or when someone else is staring at me, male or female I wink. I enjoy making people feel uncomfortable and violating social norms is the easiest way to do this, it is also the only way to do this. I had to do some thinking of a social norm that I could go against that I already do not break that often, and when I think I tend to fidget with whatever is in my hand. When I started my “Act of Deviance” I was originally just fidgeting with a pen in sociology, and then Lydia Cook started and…

fails to pass a standardized test or regents exam. Further, it is not fair, for teachers to be criticized based on how well their students perform in their state exams. In addition, it is also not fair for principals to use test scores to judge teachers how effective and ineffective they are? Ever since, the nation has industrialized, we have forgotten how strenuous teaching is and often times, they are not always observed fairly and their accomplishments are also not always acknowledged. Teacher’s role often changes from teaching to counseling, because some students are in the poverty borderline, according to a Washington D.C post, by Lyndsey Layton.…

For the pseudostuttering activity, my partner and I, Courtney, went to the mall one afternoon. We chose the mall since it is a typical place for someone to go, and a place where retail workers are used to interacting with people and getting questions asked like, “where can I find X?” and “how much is Y?” The first place I started out at was Dillards, where I asked a retail worker where the dresses were.…
