The patient in the film is a woman named Gretchen. She has had psychiatric problems her whole life and wasn’t diagnosed with multiple personality disorder until just recently. When she is feeling emotionally distressed, she switches to an aggressive personality that is more emotionally stable. While in the more aggressive personality, “Myself” talks about Gretchen as if she is another person and not herself. As other personalities take control over Gretchen’s body, she loses consciousness and has no memory of what the other personalities experience.
