The initial reaction to the story about the corner store was that the corner store did not take checks or the woman has paid with a check that did not work in the past. I originally agreed with Irving's initial interpretation's but I now agree with the couple if the white husband was able to pay with checks at the same corner store I think the store clerk was being racist and would not let the wife pay with a check because of the color of her skin. The store clerk would not agree with the couple's interpretation because it would make the clerk and the store look bad.…
As much as the deaf culture seeks to be infused and accepted in the society, it stands as a distinctive aspect from other cultures. One special aspect is the means of communication and their cultural way of carrying out their day-to-day activities. Also, once an individual’s associates, identifies and enters into the deaf culture, they will always be part of the deaf culture and by large, the deaf society. Therefore, an outstanding aspect with the deaf culture is that one does not retire from been in the deaf culture and thus there is no aging out.…
The book The Mask of benevolence by Harlan Lane, the book has changed my prospective on the life. In chapter three, there was many things that made me think about how it would be to live and be treated as deaf. These chapters have brought out the judgemental about the deaf people and the hearing people. In chapter three, there was many things that stuck out to me and made me really think about what if I was deaf, would I really wanna be treated like that. The first thing that stood out to me was on page 77.…
Genesis Corvera English 102 Professor Tamayo July 2, 2017 The Conflict Between Power and Morality The mindset of holding power over another living individual can create this superiority complex above someone who is considered abnormal or hold no significant importance. In the stories “Silence” by Tadeusz Borowski and “Home Soil” by Irene Zabytko both authors depict the psychological impact on how power can shape an innocent personality to become corrupt. Through these stories the audience is allowed to view the psychological effects, personality changes, and how morality can be molded to become something dangerous when that time period calls for a change whether it being good or bad.…
Through Deaf Eyes was an extremely enlightening documentary about deaf life in America. The film begins with the question, what do you think it would be like being a deaf person? They explain that, whenever you ask a hearing person this question they respond with a lot of “can’ts”. I can’t, I can’t I can’t. Deaf people, however, do not think like that, they think of all the things they can do.…
In an ever globally growing society, a mixture of cultures, community, and desires for control compete. Culture includes the phenotypic differences others perceive, but culture also contains the foundation of inner values and beliefs. Control is the grab for power that has been repeatedly sought after between varying regions and groups; furthermore, the repercussions of this desire is evident throughout history. Community not only brings those with similar backgrounds together, but is a vital need in human experience. Moreover, culture, control, and community are important because awareness of these different dynamics enable a more sustainable, peaceful society.…
The Youtube video “Through Deaf Eyes’” is about how Deaf culture has changed in a positive manner throughout the years. It highlights special moments in Deaf culture, such as society attempting to teach Deaf people how to speak verbally, how Deaf people are no longer discriminated in today’s culture, and how technology has impacted the Deaf community. This documentary is a very educational video about the Deaf culture and how it has evolved. This video made me come to a realization of the Deaf Culture and how it has changed drastically over the years. In the 1800’s, Deaf people were completely misunderstood and were often seen as strange or mentally retarded (ASL IVC).…
Day by day, many people fill a day full of talking, laughing, and listening without thinking anything of it. But, what would life be like if you could not hear or speak. In Carson McCullers’s, “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter,” the reader is introduced to what is thought to be the protagonist of the novel, Singer. Singer is just like any other, except he is a deaf mute. He has a strong connection with his friend, Antonapoulous, who is also a deaf mute.…
While reading a book it is essential to understand what exactly is going on, but in The Echo Maker it is very hard to keep track of what exactly was going on. Powers is a powerful writer who presented a book that was so deep and big that it caught me off guard. The novel raises questions about identity and consciousness. A central question of the novel was, do we recognize ourselves by the way others see us, or do we define ourselves? The story begins with a tragic accident that leads Mark Schluter to a serious head injury and almost killing him.…
1942, the world was broken by segregation. Martin Luther King Jr. established racial equality. Martin Luther's success for racial equality will help me achieve my dream of becoming a surgeon. His dream will help me by exposing me to new and different cultures, allow me to converse with people of other races, and to develop a diverse patient population as a surgeon. Exposure to culture is important to our society.…
Murakami did bring me to a bad place when I was reading “The Silence”, although it was still a very well written story that I was able to connect to in a personal level. Out of all Murakami’s stories “The Silence”, has to be one of the most relatable stories to any reader, because just about everyone has experienced a rumor being spread about them or spreading one themselves. Murakami did a great job in having the reader latch on to this story, and see as well as understand the true meaning and affects that a rumor may have on a person. There is no possible way that the spread of rumors could be stopped, but by informing students of the affects a rumor may have on others, may be a great start to decrease the spread of rumors. A simple rumor…
Watching the documentary Through Deaf Eyes was extremely informative. I was able to experience a side of deaf culture that I did not really know existed. It was incredible to see how far the deaf culture has come and learn where it came from. The documentary showed me just how cruel society could be when you are not seen as “normal”. The deaf community just wanted to be understood and treated with respect.…
As an individual there is always something new that will intrigue us and without thinking much about it, we just want to delve into understanding and learning that which caught our attention. This is one reason why we need to be aware of the different cultures that are out there. I must admit that with little or no exposure this can be difficult. Beyond the understanding, the most important aspects are how these differences are communicated and the different verbal codes and gestures that are applied to them. Intercultural communication is defined as “the process that occurs when member of two or more cultures or co-cultures exchange messages in a manner that is influenced by their different cultural perceptions and symbol systems, both verbally…
Cry of the Gull was written by Emmanuelle Laborit, a french actress that recounts her life experiences as a deaf person. Though this memoir had many inspiring themes, the one that stood out the most to me was how important Deaf culture is to deaf people and how it can affect their experiences. When Emmanuelle was younger, she explains that her parents did not sign to her, as they did not know for a couple of years after she was born that she was deaf, and when they finally found out, the doctors told them not to sign and encouraged speech therapy. However, when she finally learned to sign at the age of seven, she truly felt as if she had an identity. Emmanuelle’s Deaf identity has shaped her life experiences, good and bad.…
The world is becoming a much smaller place and we have to discover how we fit in. We no longer can be ostriches and bury our heads in the sand;, we must learn to communicate and deal with other cultures on a day-to-day basis. Like many other aspects of life, our approach and attitude about the situation can help or hinder the learning—if we are open to explore, the learning can be fun (like learning new recipes, eating interesting food) or if we are not open, it can be like fingernails on chalkboard (for us and those we must learn about). In many cases, learning about new cultures are not a choice, I have a friend whose new job it is to train the Chinese to take his job (it is going offshore)—pretty hard to have a good attitude about that.…
