Mycenae Lion Wall

The piece of artwork I have chosen to critique is the Lion Gate architecture found on page 39 in the textbook. The Lion Gate is the main entrance to the citadel of Mycenae. Mycenae is located on top of a small mountain. The gate is ten feet both wide and high, and narrows as it rises. The triangular shape prevents the lintel from falling in and breaking by evenly distributing weight. It was constructed of rock, gold, and clay. It is also a perfect example of a post-and-lintel arch. The top part above the lintel is a corbeled arch and is made up of two lions, which are known as symbolizing power. This is first sculpture that was found on main land Greece.

One reason I feel that the Lion Gate is significant is because it shows the Mycenaean’s outlook on life. The Mycenaean’s were far more defensive than the Minoans based upon this entrance. They lived behind very thick walls known as the Cyclopean Masonry. It was named this because according to legend, only a creature as big as the cyclops could move the large stones the wall was built with. This entrance way and its surrounding walls makes it very clear the Mycenaean’s felt they needed to defend themselves against some sort of enemy.

This piece of art is also significant because it shows that a lot of thought was put into sculpture, even this

It is still standing today on the peninsula of Peloponnesus, although Mycenae was destroyed long ago. I think that this sculpture showed us just a small taste of what the Greeks were capable of building. I also think that this is a great first example of not only the actual building technique of the Mycenaean’s but it shows that they thought farther than just how they were going to construct it and involved basic math in the plans so that it would not fall in on itself. They also were able to construct a nice relief sculpture on top of the arch to symbolize their

These sculptures were symbolic of Greece’s political and cultural history. The decorations along the walls of the Parthenon “portrayed the victories of Greek gods and heroes over their enemies, symbolizing the victory of civilization over barbarism. The sculptures displayed the citizens of Athens as being close to the gods, which to an Athenian citizen of the time, signified the glorification of all of Greece’s people” (Reppas, 3). The 92 metopes that decorated the Parthenon depicted many of the themes of Greek history as well as important figures like Olympian gods and scenes from Greek mythology. The statue of Athena inside the Parthenon is the most important sculpture in the entire temple.…

Monuments shouldn’t be established or no longer established because of a sculpture capturing only a specific time and place of how it happened and also can take too much space; it also causes controversy between citizens in public places; such as malls, parks etc. Individual communities perceive that it could be an agreeable way to preserve history from different types of bourgeois who made a change in antiquity and the world. But constructing large monuments will not get you anywhere. You might think it could recall some of the history of people, but it can only take you so far. Your mind won’t go far away when the person was born or each of their birthdays.…

Rome, a civilization of great importance for the development of the modern world, which has adapted upon many of the aspects of it which derive from the people surrounded by the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic Seas, from ancient western Italy (Etruscans) and ancient southern Italy (Greeks). Rome was the centerpiece of Earth’s eastern hemisphere and stretched from modern day Spain to the beginning of the Caspian Sea. Rome may have immortalized its own ideologies and structures such as roads or the Julian Calendar, named after Roman emperor Julius Caesar, but this civilization has also amended and created its own variations of concepts and ideas already laid out by former, less popular civilizations, through the means of cultural diffusion. Some of the characteristics and developments which mainly reflect on the dynamic of cultural diffusion in Roman civilization include but are not limited to…

A sculpture that tends to stick out to me is Capture of the Sabine Women by Giambologna. This particular sculpture is classified as sculpture in the round. It requires the viewer to walk around it to view its entirety. This beautiful work of art was hand carved by the artist, Giambologna. I think, by making the sculpture in the round, it makes the viewer really look closely at the whole sculpture, instead of just glancing at it.…

Artistic works have gone through extensive changes and transitions throughout time. Each time period develops a style that sometimes is carried on or merely tweaked in the next time period, and others times is snuffed out completely. By studying specific pieces from successive time periods, one can develop a sense for these changes of style as well as the reasoning behind them. Pieces from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Greek, and Roman periods are great examples of this. The Hall of Bulls is located deep within the caves of Lascaux, France and is an interesting example of Paleolithic art.…

While the definition of beauty states that it is a combination of qualities that pleases the sight, many people believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This means that each individual has their own views towards beauty, especially in the “ideal” beauty. Although beauty is a concept every being has recognized since their beginning of time (i.e. young children can already acknowledge the beauty in flowers), their views and ideas towards it are mostly influenced by their environment and culture. Throughout history, it can be noted that every culture has their own perspective on how they visualize beauty or what exemplifies beauty. However, it may be hard to determine how ancient cultures view beauty as there are a lack of primary sources.…
