Freshman Composition I’s course objective was designed to help students “focus on developing and expressing ideas clearly and effectively to communicate with various audiences for various purposes and occasions, through written, oral, aural, and visual venues by means of individual and team projects.” Throughout this course my classmates and I reviewed principles of the writing process, including: planning, logical organizational, development strategies, revision, and editing, we were also introduced to rhetorical techniques and vigorous library research. With those techniques, this course has helped my classmates and I develop critical thinking skills like: summary, paraphrase, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple sources. Before I began this class my writing process consisted of simply being assigned as assignment by my high school english teachers and coming up with an essay at the top of my head that properly fit the space requirement and prompt that I would then turn in the day it was due.…

The day started out exceptionally. It was around 4:30 AM and the sun was just piercing through the veil of the horizon. I jumped out of bed, dressed in a long sleeve and a pair of old faded jeans and proceeded to brush my teeth as well as a long hot shower. Afterwards, as a precaution, I had breakfast because I didn’t know where we going to eat on the way to Boston. Rushing to get there already I grabbed my sling bag with my pillow, snacks and money and made my way to school where adventure was surely waiting for me.…

The Concreted Declaration of the Students of Rowland High School, When in course of human events, it becomes necessary for the school to dismiss the compulsory nature of the school system, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the free and lenient station which the Laws of Nature and of the country entitle them, an adequate respect to the opinions of students demands that they should declare the causes which impel them to dislike school as a whole. We hold these truths to be pronounced: that all students are created equal, that they are given by their Creator the rights of Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness, and that they have been enduring the harsh and stressful environment of school for as long as they have. In order for…

Short shorts. Short shorts as far as the eye can see. This is what I saw all over ETSU’s beautiful campus as I went one day without my cell phone. Initially, I thought nothing much would come out of the seemingly uninteresting assignment, but I was mistaken. It proved to be an eye-opening day, mostly because I saw how much students were on their phones, I learned that I am terrible at telling time, and I can now cope with my social anxiety instead of jumping to my phone.…

I sat there in the hard seat of my desk and waited patiently. The scent of Lysol was overwhelmingly powerful in the room, but I knew by the third week it would be overpowered by the smell of musty children and chalk dust. Looking around the room at my new classmates, it was easy to tell who had done the summer assignments, especially with their conspicuous faces.…

Growing up with catholic education, I was primarily taught the importance of reading and writing. The generic hamburger 5-paragraph essay format was on our 10 commandments of writing and so was the idea of a minimum 6-8 sentences per paragraph. Entering high school English class, I found myself in a different situation than most typical high school students. My school offered International Baccalaureate English classes; these classes were structured differently than that of AP or Standard English. In this class, we were left to fend on our own.…
