My Writing Style Analysis

Personally, my weakness would always be forming the structure and have the same style of writing. With the cycles from EliReview, it allowed me to explore other student’s writings, which makes me realize other styles I can incorporate into my writing. In addition, I noticed my structure of writing improved exponentially due to the fact the cycle required the second draft in the same week, forcing me to edit my draft, which results in improvement of my writing structure. I did not include an essay for the portfolium project, but if I was to include one it would definitely be the Review Annotated Bibliography 2 as it was my second time writing a similar assignment, which would make it my strongest essay. This is not only my strongest essay, …show more content…
After each cycle in EliReview, I would read the comments thoroughly and rate the comments from 1-5 stars. After evaluating the comments, I would choose comments that are not repetitive and helpful and include it in my revision plan. Next, I would form a short summary that consists of 3 sentences about my plan to revise the essay. During my revisions, I would use the revision plan as a reference and would specifically go back to the essay and edit that particular portion. This way, the readers would notice a change from my second draft as they suggested a change in the first essay. This portfolio vividly illustrates a student going through an intensive amount of research along using critical thinking in the process of writing this essay. I can not lie, but this assignment was quite rigorous, but I managed to pull through and finish the entire project when finals and other assignments are in the way. In the end, not only I learned how to become a better and stronger writer, but the most important skill I gained is probably time management, although I felt overwhelmed, I managed to complete this

Reflective writing as a genre allows for a combination of personal reflection and critical thinking all intertwined into one. I turned my reflection essay into a new reflection that focused on a different level of the education system that would allow for me to reflect on my first semester of college to back up my allegations against the school system. When attempting to revise my essay in a new way I reread my old one and found an interesting theme screaming out of the paper. It was saying, “high school and Regents did not prepare me for college.” I took the idea a little further and expanded it to the SAT, that is a similar testing style to Regents, that similarly did not prepare me for college, and through research I found that income status…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

Through the four essays I have learned valuable skills that will be the support for future essays. On the two beginning essays my ability to use vocabulary and other valuable skills was improving. The most crucial step of my writing processes is letting my mind go wild and my fingers move freely. Whenever I write anything, I always let myself write whatever is on my mind at that exact second. Even if it doesn’t make 100% sense or isn’t exactly on topic, I’ll type it out. When I was writing my essay, I didn’t stop to fix anything until the very end. When I finished writing, I looked for mistakes.…

I think that paraphrasing will be the hardest for me to avoid while writing. It seems that sometimes it is hard to write or summarize something that is so well written already. The way I will work around that is to stop and re-read what I am wanting to summarize, take a few important words out of the material I am reviewing and jot those down, then go back and write what is needed to complete my sentence or idea. Once I have completed my writing, I will review and make sure I have properly cited my work. Using the guidelines discussed in our “Read Section”, and following the instructions listed on how to source correctly should avoid paraphrasing mistakes and plagiarism.…

I’ve experienced many hardships when dealing with writing assignments, but the worst would have to be my Senior Portfolio. After starting the assignment, I learned very quickly that the assignment was going to be the easy compared to gathering all the information needed about myself. I was required to create multiple different essays that consisted of my post-high school plan and a reflective essay. It seemed easy to write essays on myself, but until I was required to write it all down, I never realized how many experiences contribute into making me who I am today. Even though I find it as the most challenging writing assignment, I also see it as the best learning experience to show who I am and how I plan my future.…

He showed me that with every argument comes a counter argument; adding a counter argument reinforced my argument greatly. Another technique I applied to my essays with Professor Castro’s instruction was planning. In high school, planning an essay seemed like a waste of time because the assignments were always just five paragraph, five sentence essays. Since we had to write these essays in such a short amount of time for tests, I was able to produce the work the night before. On the other hand, Professor Castro has shown the divergence between high school and college; planning and editing are two essential steps in writing.…

I have noticed in my different essays while examining them that I would often excel in one part of the essay, while still failing to repair other flaws. In my Modernism essay, I incorporated evidence well, but I did not add smooth transitions, making the writing seem choppy. In my synthesis essay, I made sure to polish my transitions and include plenty of evidence to support my claims, yet the essay was focused too much on the evidence and not enough on the arguments themselves and the meaning of the evidence. Nevertheless, I fixed nearly every mistake there was in my last essay, an analysis of The Visit. I used strong diction that contributed to both imagery and my defeated tone.…

I feel very strongly about my social issue and my views have not changed in the slightest bit. In Writing Assignment 2, I discussed the rising tensions between the public and the police. Throughout my every day life I had begun to notice that instead of being seen as heroes the police were becoming villains in the eyes of the public. By observing and talking with police officers I have seen first hand that they are struggling to work with a public that sees them as an enemy. While the media is working against the police, I learned that there are also organizations that are working to improve relations (Prall).…

Change Throughout my high school years, the english classes I have taken are way different from college. See... I never wrote an essay every week or so, or having my research paper be acknowledged with organization, development, expression, and grammar errors throughout my essay like it’s been done in college english classes, and I say research paper because that's what I would mainly write in high school. So now finishing my first college quarter of English 101 and having learned so much more to properly writing an essay, like eliminating “to be” verbs, properly using an author's work by citing them, run-on sentences, sentence fragment, proper use of quotation marks and parenthesis, and even MLA style of writing.…

Some of the different strategies that I had used for each of the different essays is counterarguments, peer edits and reviews, knowing when my information is credible, and St. Martin’s Writing Guide. All of these things have strengthened my critical thinking during revisions and while writing my essays. The different tasks helped me look at new things to write about and how to present these different tasks properly, counterarguments helped me look at the topic I was supporting and find an argument against why my side was not the strongest, peer edits and reviews helped me revise essays strongly, and the St. Martin’s Writing Guide introduced new techniques of writing that were new to me and how to do it strongly. In my Proposing a Solution essay, I had used multiple different sources to prove one point in several different ways. The multiple sources came together to support my side of the topic.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
