My Writing Style Analysis

Decent Essays
Well, I consider myself to be a decent writer, even though writing is not my strong point. Therefore, as I have come to the completion of my degree, I have learned numerous writing skills along the way. I learned the MLA style, when I started taking my basics in college and the APA style for my upper division courses. At times I get confused on the formats as I consider them to be similar in some ways. Furthermore, they differ and each has its own different style of quoting and citation in articles, books, phrases, etc. The part that I struggle when writing an essay is the introduction part of a paper in MLA style and the Abstract page for the APA style. In starting a writing essay or paper can be difficult for me, but once I start I cannot

Recent surveys by Lehman and DuFrene (2013), found: Executives contribute their success in the field to an ability to write and speak (p.3). The first step in becoming a successful communicator is understanding how you communicate, and how others communicate with you. The communication style assessment, classified my style as reflective. Those who are reflective are able to build appropriate self-knowledge, and by listening to peers increase overall social competence of others will develop positively (Erzsébet, 2013, p.747). In addition to reflective there is a directive, emotive, and supportive.…

Reflective writing as a genre allows for a combination of personal reflection and critical thinking all intertwined into one. I turned my reflection essay into a new reflection that focused on a different level of the education system that would allow for me to reflect on my first semester of college to back up my allegations against the school system. When attempting to revise my essay in a new way I reread my old one and found an interesting theme screaming out of the paper. It was saying, “high school and Regents did not prepare me for college.” I took the idea a little further and expanded it to the SAT, that is a similar testing style to Regents, that similarly did not prepare me for college, and through research I found that income status…

When it comes to producing academic papers my writing style remains adaptive to meet the rhetorical context of a specific course. Meaning, my focus and attention is directed towards proper formatting, and writing a paper that engages a reader. My process involves narrowing in on a topic, gathering sources, free style writing, creating an outline, writing a draft, revisions, and then producing a final…

Another reason I don’t like writing them is because I usually can’t pick what kind of essay I want to write or what I want to write about. The format is a huge reason I why writing essays is not fun. I was always taught MLA format up until I had Mrs. Fiske. She taught APA format because she said that is what we would use in college. That made me completely forget how to use MLA format and here I am needing it.…

After reading your response I realized I was not completely clear on my point of view. I have notice this before and am working on being more clear when writing but also have a balance on not over explaining that can lead me to run off topic. This is not ease for me to do but when I receive feedback from people truly telling me their opinion and not just I agreeing it helps me correct my writing style. So thank you once more for truly critiquing me and taking the time to read my journal.…

Previous to taking this course, I used to be comfortable writing in only one style, and if I was forced to adopt another style I would usually have a poor outcome. Last but not least, I wanted to have a clear, working knowledge of the MLA style since it was my first time ever being exposed to it. I believe that I have successfully achieved these goals. Each assignment required us to write in a different style and conventions. For example,…

My experiences working with APA and MLA have been useful. I have learned to properly communicate a message using these formats. I did not know much about these formats until English Composition I—my Professor started us on APA for a couple of weeks and that made the MLA learning process much easier. Writing in these documentations has opened my horizons and has educated me to speak about a project with more of a choice. I am majoring in Pre-Nursing…

The most crucial step of my writing processes is letting my mind go wild and my fingers move freely. Whenever I write anything, I always let myself write whatever is on my mind at that exact second. Even if it doesn’t make 100% sense or isn’t exactly on topic, I’ll type it out. When I was writing my essay, I didn’t stop to fix anything until the very end. When I finished writing, I looked for mistakes.…

I think that paraphrasing will be the hardest for me to avoid while writing. It seems that sometimes it is hard to write or summarize something that is so well written already. The way I will work around that is to stop and re-read what I am wanting to summarize, take a few important words out of the material I am reviewing and jot those down, then go back and write what is needed to complete my sentence or idea. Once I have completed my writing, I will review and make sure I have properly cited my work. Using the guidelines discussed in our “Read Section”, and following the instructions listed on how to source correctly should avoid paraphrasing mistakes and plagiarism.…

The correct use of different words creates good sentence structure (Grellier & Goerke, 2010). Using parallel words in each sentence can help the reader better understand the ideas (Grellier & Goerke, 2010). In my writing am have developed this skill from feedback I received from smart thinking (www.smarthinking.com) earlier in my degree. I understand the use of the same or a similar word makes my writing more understandable.…

My writing process coming into junior year was quite flawed and would go moderately like this: I would try and start with some hook that at least sounded like it related to the topic I was assigned. I then added a thesis that did not sound like total trash that included exactly what I planned to discuss. As I wrote the rest of my essays, I would sometimes realize there was something I felt added to the argument’s appeal, and after adding it to the body paragraphs, I summed it up in a couple words and squeezed it into my thesis. That was about the maximum amount of revising I would do for my essays. My decently crafted essays contained simple diction with a few SAT words I remembered while writing thrown in awkwardly.…

I do write every once in a while, so I have somewhat of an idea of what my writing style would be. Varied; that is my writing style. When I write I try to explain myself as clearly as possible with my ideas. However, when I write about questions I have and things I wonder about I tend to write in a mysterious tone. When my friends ask for a letter of advice or thoughts on certain issues they are having I get deep and dramatic.…
