My Writing Struggles

Decent Essays
Everyone is faced with struggles in life, whether it be physical, emotional, or spiritual. Throughout my life I’ve been in a constant struggle with reading and writing. I am not the one who can claim to be able to remember every single moment of my premature years. I do know this, however, it was one of the toughest times of my short lifespan. Out of all the problems from being overweight, nervous most days, and being sick a great deal of the time along with having very few friends, learning to read as my memory chronicles it was the biggest if not the hardest problem a child such as myself could face. Reading in those days gave me a headache and made my eyes sear with pain most of the time. Also my mind could never really stay focused on

so I wasn’t interested for long. I don’t have much memory as a kid with reading and writing at home, because my parents never really forced me to read or write and I don’t ever remember being read to either. The only time I ever remember being forced to read something was when I got grounded for lying and my mom grounded me for the whole summer and made me stay inside and read the whole…

Having to apply what I learned from each essay has really helped me a lot. By learning to use MLA style to have a better look throughout my essays, and fixing unnecessary semicolon and using commas when needed to avoid run on sentences or fragments, as well as eliminating to-be verbs for shorter more detailed sentence, and how to use work or words that aren't mine correctly to avoid plagiarism. From learning all those things, it has totally changed my way of writing because the way I used to go about my written, is not even close to how ENGL 101 changed me to being a better writer than I was before.…

Going through elementary school reading was always a struggle for me. It was challenging for me to fully comprehend what we were doing and reading in the class. Every friday I would go to see a teacher one on one to practice reading it involved being timed and having to tell her everything I had just read so that it would build up my comprehension. I remember feeling very embarrassed to be pulled out of class for extra help. Going through that didn't help that much, I was missing class…

Learning to read is a skill many can obtain quickly or not so well. Myself, on the other hand was one of the many children who struggled with not only the thought of reading, but the actual process of reading not only a book, but sentences, word and sounding out words. Struggling through elementary with reading problems and on and off again help made it seem even worse. Going into kindergarten was intimidating, with all the bright colored posters with words even I couldn’t read. Having to be assigned seats next to strangers who soon would become my closest friends.…

Writing is an art; we create our thoughts in your mind and express it on paper. Once we start writing we keep getting new ideas and when we re-read what we wrote, sometimes it might surprise us. I like to write during early mornings or in the evening when it is quiet. My reading table is facing towards the window so when fresh air is in my room, fresh ideas generate inside me as well. I make sure to have some healthy snacks and a bottle of water in front me…

In order to become a stronger writer one must recognize his errors. In my previous essays I have not done a good job of expressing my subtopics. I have made the mistake of hiding my subtopics, making them unclear. In order to fix this problem I could create a web or some sort of visual that will allow me to organize my thoughts. Having a specific sentence in the beginning of each paragraph will also orientate the reader on what to look for in that specific paragraph.…

I would say I have a neutral opinion on English classes. Some days I like them, and some days I dread the time when I have to go home and write another really long essay. I have really enjoyed reading books and plays in class, and I hope we can do that in the future.…

I have loved to write since I can remember chewing on my first pencil eraser. I started with scribbles, and then random words. Later on, however, I was required to write persuasive arguments and academic jibber jabber. Writing these papers, I began with a claim or argument in mind I intended to convince my readers was true. Not wanting to waste much time, I started by writing down my main idea and then searching for relevant stuff to fill the paper with the required number of words.…

What expectations have been placed on your writing in the past? I was fortunate enough to go through high school with a group of great group of English professors, people who really cared about their students and wanted them to succeed. My main influence in high school was my Advanced Writing professor Mr. Gehrman, a man who was known to be very eccentric, and also had high expectations for myself and the rest of my class. I would like to say that I met his expectations the majority of the time, but I’ve had instances where a couple of my papers were clearly lackluster, and he didn’t hesitate to tell me. I really did appreciate that type of honesty from a person who I considered a role model, and I believe that he was the driving force behind…

Ironically, though I wasn’t immediately taken with reading, I became an avid reader after those first few difficult years. I was a regular at my elementary school’s small library, and I competed in everything book-related that I could. My Reading Experience

In seventh grade, my reading experience went farther downhill. The teacher expected us to do projects reflecting over what we had read every time we finished a book, with a minimum of five per trimester. I hated doing these reflection projects, so my quantity of reading fell further to just five books every three months. However, the final nail in the coffin of my reading came in eighth grade. On the first day of school, the teacher informed us that the only genre we would be allowed to read for out reading logs, which were unnecessarily complicated, was nonfiction.…
